Days after leading a curtailed mutiny against Russian President Vladimir Putin, the headquarters of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group made an announcement that it was now working in “normal mode”. The announcement came as Yevgeny Prigozhin prepped for a shift to Belarus under the deal mediated by President Alexander Lukashenko.
Reuters, the mercenary group in a statement said that Wagner has “worked for the future of Russia” and thanked its supporters.
The office said, “Despite events that have taken place, the centre continues to work in normal mode in accordance to the law of the Russian Federation.”
The fate of the Wagner group has remained uncertain since the near-rebellion left President Putin on shaky grounds. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the organisation’s leader, has not been seen since Saturday. However the Kremlin said he will be sent to neighbouring Belarus under the Minsk-brokered deal.
Under the agreement Prigozhin and his soldiers are set to receive amnesty and move to Belarus. There was no confirmation of his whereabouts on Monday, although it has been reported that he was seen at a hotel in the Belarusian capital, Minsk.
