Intense counter-terrorism operations are currently underway across various locations in Jammu and Kashmir, according to government sources cited by ANI. No specific updates have been shared publicly so far due to the sensitive and evolving nature of the situation.
The heightened security activity follows the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which India has directly blamed on Pakistan-backed militant groups. In response, India has swiftly escalated diplomatic and strategic actions — suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, cancelling visas issued to Pakistani nationals, closing the Attari check post, and significantly downsizing Pakistan’s diplomatic staff in India.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his official residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, on Monday to discuss key national security measures. The meeting came a day after Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan briefed Singh on operational strategies formulated to counter Pakistan’s alleged involvement.
Deadliest attack in decades
The Pahalgam attack claimed at least 26 lives, including that of a foreign tourist, making it the deadliest terror incident in the region since 1999. The massacre unfolded in the picturesque Baisaran Valley during peak tourist season, striking a severe blow to the sense of normalcy that had gradually returned to the region over recent years.
In the aftermath, the Jammu and Kashmir government has shut down 48 out of 87 tourist destinations across the valley. Intelligence agencies have issued warnings about the possibility of more terror attacks targeting tourists, security forces, and non-locals.
Sleeper cells activated
Sources have confirmed that communication intercepts reveal sleeper cells in the valley were activated shortly after the Pahalgam attack. These cells are reportedly being instructed to plan and initiate further operations.
“In light of the recent militant attack on tourists dated 22.04.2025, reliable inputs from credible sources and sister intelligence agencies suggest that militant organisations are actively planning attacks targeting security forces and non-local individuals in the upcoming days,” intelligence reports accessed by India Today noted.
The security apparatus in Jammu and Kashmir remains on high alert as counter-terrorism agencies work to neutralize potential threats. Further updates are expected as operations continue.
