India’s ambitious PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) has witnessed a remarkable uptake, with 10.09 lakh households installing rooftop solar panels across the country as of January 27, 2025. Spearheaded by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MoN&RE), this initiative aims to provide affordable and sustainable electricity to Indian homes.
Gujarat has emerged as the frontrunner in the scheme, installing 3,51,273 rooftop solar panels, accounting for 41.47% of the national share. Maharashtra follows with 1,92,936 installations (22.79%), while Uttar Pradesh and Kerala have recorded 73,602 (8.69%) and 65,423 (7.73%) installations, respectively. Rajasthan stands at 26,622 (3.14%), with other states contributing 1,37,008 (13.58%).
The initiative is a key step in India’s green energy transition, reducing dependence on fossil fuels while lowering electricity costs for consumers. The government’s push for decentralized solar power aligns with its goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
With increasing awareness and streamlined subsidy mechanisms, the program is expected to expand further, benefiting millions of households while strengthening India’s commitment to renewable energy.
