Union Minister Jitendra Singh has unveiled India’s first saline water LED lamp named Roshni. This lamp uses saline water or salt water to power LED lamps.
As per the Ministry of National Institute of Earth Science, the Union Minister had launched and showcased this lamp during his visit to a Coastal Research Vessel named Sagar Anveshika, operated and used by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai for coastal research.
Mr Singh mentioned that this saline water lamp will boost the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujala Scheme’ launched earlier in 2015 which aims to provide LED bulbs and tube lights to low-income households at subsidised rates.
“Roshni lamps along with Power Ministry’s schemes like solar study lamps will be driving a vibrant renewable energy program aimed at achieving energy security, energy access and reducing the carbon footprints of the national economy,” he said.
In addition, he stated that this could be used in landlocked areas of the country as fresh water can be mixed with common salt to power this lamp. This method may not be very cost-effective but is very efficient.
Mr Singh urged NIOT to share and transfer the technology to industries for its mass production as this lamp can prove to be of immense help in rural areas of India that have poor electricity supply or regions that have been hit by natural calamities.
Subsequently, the union minister along with the Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Science, Dr M. Ravichandran extended the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign and visited the laboratories to hoist the tricolour on board the research vessel.
Mr Singh also reviewed the progress of NIOT developed LLow-TemperatureThermal Desalination (LTTD) technology for conversion of seawater to potable water. This technology has been successfully demonstrated in the Lakshadweep Islands and Informed the 3 desalination plants developed in Kavaratti, Agati and Minicoy Islands in Lakshadweep.
