In today’s world teachers hold a great and invaluable place in our lives. We respect our teachers who shape us and make us ready for our future. We owe a great debt and gratitude to them. In this spirit people around the world celebrate Guru Purnima.
Based on Karma Yoga, Guru Purnima (Poornima) is a custom honoring all of the academic and spiritual Gurus who have attained enlightenment or evolution. And are willing to impart their knowledge. Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists all commemorate it as a religious holiday in India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
Mahatma Gandhi resurrected the celebration as a memorial to Shrimad Rajchandra, his spiritual mentor. It is also known as Vyasa Purnima because Veda Vyasa, the sage who wrote the Mahabharata and assembled the Vedas, celebrates his birthday on this day.
This year Guru Purnima celebration is being conducted on July 13. Also, Legend has it that Lord Buddha gave his first sermon on this day, and as a result, his devotees honour him on this day.
