Gujarat has reported its first suspected case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), following two confirmed cases in Bengaluru. A two-month-old baby, currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Chandkheda, is believed to have tested positive for HMPV, though no official confirmation has been made yet.
Earlier today, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed two cases of HMPV in Karnataka. Both cases involved infants—a three-month-old female and an eight-month-old male—treated for bronchopneumonia at Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. While the female infant has been discharged, the male infant is currently recovering. Neither of the patients had a history of international travel.

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause flu-like symptoms ranging from mild to severe. The virus spreads through direct contact, contaminated surfaces, or respiratory droplets and is most active during the winter and early spring months.

- Mild Symptoms: Cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, fever
- Severe Symptoms (in some cases): Wheezing, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, pneumonia, and asthma aggravation
Who Is at Risk?
The virus poses the highest risk to:
- Children under five years old
- Elderly individuals
- People with weakened immune systems
