Government keen on raising the legal marriage age for woman from 18 to 21

Cabinet has approved the proposal of raising the legal marriage age of women from 18 to 21- same as men

There have been a lot of disputes among the masses regarding the legal marriage age of women in recent years. On 15 August in his independence day speech of 2021, PM Narendra Modi addressed the nation about their plans to raise the legal age of women in the country from 18 to 21, same as men. Following the cabinet approval, government is all agog to introduce amendments to the prohibition of Child marriage act,2006, and there after bringing amendments in Special marriage act and personal laws such as Hindu marriage act,1955, as per Indian Express’ sources.

This step bids fair to be an move to address the recommendations submitted to Niti Aayog in Dec 2020 by the Centre’s task force headed by Jaya Jaitley to call on “matters pertaining to age of motherhood, imperatives of lowering MMR (Maternal Mortality Rate), improvement of nutritional levels and related issues

After the recent National Family Heath Survey(NFHS) data which stated a significant surge in the sex ratio, wherein there 1020 women per 1000 men, this decision will cater to a lot of women promoting education, health and social improvements in the population.

Another survey by the NFHS revealed that the child marriages across the nation has been depreciating significantly from 27 per cent in 2015-16 to 16-23 per cent in 2019-20 and following the cabinet’s approval the numbers would come down further.
