Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ which was supposed to start on January 14 from Hatta Kangjeibung in the Imphal East district, has apparently received no authorization from the Manipur administration. The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president, Keisham Megachandra, expressed dismay and described it as a breach of people’s rights. The decision was made in the middle of Manipur’s “critical” law and order crisis, which resulted from ethnic violence that broke out in May 2023.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated on Tuesday that the matter is under “active consideration,” emphasizing the precarious law and order conditions in the state. When questioned about granting permission for the foot march, Singh mentioned that reports from various security agencies are being evaluated, and a concrete decision will follow.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal noted that the Manipur government has sought approval from the Centre. The ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ is expected to be flagged off by Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, with the participation of chief ministers from Congress-ruled states and other party leaders.
Fresh gunfire was reported on Monday between Manipur Police and militants in Moreh border town along the Indo-Myanmar border. The Chief Minister assured that combined forces, including Assam Rifles, BSF, and state police, are actively working to apprehend the armed individuals responsible for attacking security forces.
