India’s tea industry remains a vital part of its economy, with 1,551 operational tea estates spread across the country. Assam dominates the sector with 762 estates, accounting for nearly 50% of the total, solidifying its status as India’s tea capital.

West Bengal follows with 436 estates, primarily concentrated in the Darjeeling, Terai, and Dooars regions. Tamil Nadu (129 estates) and Kerala (92 estates) maintain strong positions in South India’s tea production.

Among northeastern states, Tripura (52 estates) and Arunachal Pradesh (30 estates) are emerging players. Other notable contributors include Karnataka (16), Himachal Pradesh (15), Bihar (7), and Uttarakhand (6). The tea industry in Meghalaya (2) and Sikkim (1) remains minimal.

The tea sector’s continued expansion highlights India’s role as the world’s second-largest tea producer, with efforts to boost exports and domestic consumption driving growth. Government policies and sustainable farming practices will play a key role in shaping the industry’s future.
