Mumbai commuters to face fare hike: Auto and taxi rates to increase from February 1

Mumbai’s auto-rickshaw and taxi fares are set to rise, marking the first hike since October 2022.

Mumbai’s auto-rickshaw and taxi fares are set to rise, marking the first hike since October 2022. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) has approved the increase following repeated demands from unions, citing rising operational costs and soaring fuel prices as the main reasons.

What’s Changing?

•Auto-rickshaw base fare: Increased from ₹23 to ₹26.

•Taxi base fare: Raised from ₹25 to ₹28.

This ₹3 hike reflects growing financial pressure on drivers, particularly due to the consistent rise in CNG prices, which have surged significantly over the past two years. Currently, CNG in Mumbai costs ₹79 per kg, up from ₹57 per kg in 2021, impacting earnings and making the existing fare structure unsustainable.

Why the Hike?

Union leaders pushed for the fare increase, citing challenges like maintenance costs, higher fuel rates, and inflation. The hike aligns with recommendations under the Khatua Committee guidelines, which allow for periodic fare adjustments based on changing operational costs.

“The increase is necessary to ensure drivers can sustain their livelihoods while maintaining service quality,” said a union representative.

Impact on Commuters

While the fare revision provides much-needed relief for drivers, commuters are likely to feel the pinch. With daily transportation costs rising, many Mumbaikars are questioning whether this will further strain their budgets in an already expensive city.

When Will It Start?

The revised fares are set to take effect from February 1, 2025, allowing a few days for implementation and awareness among both drivers and passengers. The authorities are expected to roll out detailed guidelines for enforcement.

Fare Hike in Context

This increase comes against the backdrop of surging CNG prices, which have seen multiple hikes over the past year:

•October 2022: ₹57 per kg.

•November 2024: ₹77 per kg.

•December 2024: ₹78 per kg.

Unions argue that without these adjustments, the transport system would face severe disruptions as drivers struggle to cover costs.

Looking Ahead

While this fare hike addresses the immediate concerns of drivers, it also raises questions about the affordability of public transport for daily commuters. With no foreseeable relief in fuel prices, further fare revisions may be on the horizon.
