According to authorities, there may be more casualties as many are believed to be stranded. According to Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena, the tragedy also affected a third goods train.
The Coromandel Express had some carriages that had derailed and fallen into the nearby lines as it travelled from Howrah to Chennai. Amitabh Sharma, a spokesman for the Railway Ministry, informed NDTV that the Yashwantpur-Howrah Superfast train slammed the wrecked cars from the opposite direction.
The two trains are designated as 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express and 12864 Yashwantpur-Howrah Superfast Express, respectively, in their schedules.
