Bourbon whisky lovers in India have a reason to celebrate! The Indian government has announced a significant reduction in tariffs on bourbon whisky, bringing relief to American distillers and international liquor brands. The move comes amid growing trade tensions and recent criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly highlighted what he calls “unfair” levies on American goods.
The new tariff structure, issued on February 13, reduces the total duty on bourbon imports from 150% to 100%. This change benefits brands like Suntory’s Jim Beam, which are expected to see increased demand in India’s thriving $35 billion spirits market. However, the revised tariff applies only to bourbon whisky—other imported alcoholic beverages continue to face the existing 150% tax.
The tariff cut follows Trump’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House, where trade imbalances and reciprocal tariffs were key discussion points. Trump has been vocal about imposing duties on countries that tax American goods heavily, making India’s latest move a step toward easing trade friction between the two nations.
