The process of applying one cloth to another, with any design and stitching around the edge, is known as an applique. Learn more about Applique with the help of this article.
What is Applique?
Sometimes used to enhance garments or home textiles, applique is a sewing technique in which fabric patches are put on a foundation fabric and then stitched in place by hand or machine with the raw edges rolled under or covered with ornamental stitching.
Applique patterns frequently reflected political and philosophical viewpoints while also drawing inspiration from daily life.
Elephants’ feet, birds, flowers, landscapes, markets, village life, nature sceneries, and other subjects are depicted in collages that mix patchwork, appliqué, and embroidery. Appliqué is used internationally as a decorative method for banners, apparel, and exhibition items.
Is it different from Patchwork?
Patchwork, as used by quilters, is the process of stitching together cloth from smaller pieces that are then sewed together and are referred to as patches.
Contrarily, while making appliques, you only need to sew a few different pieces together; the base fabric serves as your canvas, allowing you to stitch any patterns you like with any fabric you like. Beads, sequins, or other ornamental elements can be used instead of fabric in the modern method of appliqué, making it an extremely practical mixed media technique.
