All except China support India ’s bid to join UNSC with Permanent Seat

The government told the Lok Sabha on Friday that 4 out of 5 permanent members of the Security Council have supported India’s proposal to be a permanent member of the UNSC.

The US, France, United Kingdom and Russia have supported India’s candidature for a permanent seat in the world’s top security body the UN Security Council.

The Minister of State External Affairs V Muraleedharan responded to the question in the parliament by stating that India has been consistently discussing this issue to reform the USNC with China. As China is the only country which has not supported India’s bid.

“Four out of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council have bilaterally expressed official affirmations of support for India’s candidature to a permanent seat in an expanded UN Security Council,” the minister said.

India ’s bid to UNSC Permanent Seat

He also stated that it is the government’s “highest priority” to get a permanent membership in Security Council and expand it.

“Towards this end, the government has undertaken various initiatives aimed at building international support for India. The matter is consistently taken up during bilateral and multilateral meetings. At all levels, including at the highest levels”. He said.

He also referred to statements made by the Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson last year. Further, regarding both countries’ consultations on the UNSC.

India ‘s Minister of State External Affairs Muraleedharan mentioned that the Chinese support reforms in the UNSC in a manner that increases the representation. Which increases authority and efficacy of the body and represents the views and voices of developing nations.

Currently, there are five permanent members is the Security Council. With 10 non-permanent members including India that change membership every two years.

There has been a growing number of countries bidding for a permanent seat at the UNSC. Japan, Brazil, South Africa and Germany have been top contenders alongside India.
