Serum Institute of India fulfils its commitment by producing over 10 crore Covishield doses in June

As India fastens its vaccination drive, Pune-based biopharmaceuticals company Serum Institute of India has already produced more than 10 crore doses of Covishield vaccine in the month of June.

In May, Prakash Kumar Singh, the company’s Director at Government and Regulatory Affairs had assured the Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the production of Covishield vaccine would ramp up to 10 crore doses in June. He had stated that the company would be able to manufacture as well as supply nine to ten crore Covishield doses as compared to the production capacity of 6.5 crore doses in May.

Under the new phase of COVID-19 vaccine universalization which began on June 21, the country’s COVID-19 inoculation has been increasing. About 69 lakh doses of vaccine were administered daily on an average.

According to the immunization data published on June 28 at 7 am displayed that the country had administered 64.25 vaccine doses in a single day. As of now, the growing number of jabs under the nationwide vaccination drive is 32.17 crore.

As per the information provided by the Serum Institute of India to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), the biotechnology company has sent 45 batches of Covishield to the Central Drugs Laboratory (Kasauli) for release comprising of 10.80 crore doses in June until now.

Under the updated guidelines, 75 per cent of the vaccines are procured by the Centre. People above 18 years of age are now eligible for free COVID-19 vaccine doses.
