COVID-19: Over 50,000 cases for fifth consecutive day, tally crosses 18 lakh mark

With 52,972 fresh cases being reported in the last 24 hours, India’s Coronavirus tally has reached 18,03,695. This is the fifth consecutive day that COVID-19 cases have increased by more than 50,000. The death toll jumped to 38,135 as 771 patients succumbed to the infection in a single day. On the brighter side, 40,574 patients recovered in the past 24 hours, taking the number of recoveries to 11,86,203.

As per the data released by the Union Health Ministry, currently, there are 5,79,357 active cases in the country. The recovery rate has increased to 65.76%.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the country has conducted 2,02,02,858 sample tests for the Coronavirus infection. 3,81,027 samples were tested alone on Sunday.

The Health Ministry said in a statement, “Coordinated implementation of COVID-19 management strategy by the Union and State/UT governments and selfless sacrifice of all frontline health and other workers and COVID-19 warriors across sectors have ensured that the recoveries are continuously on the rise.”

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has given a nod to the Serum Institute of India for conducting phase II and phase III human clinical trials of the Oxford University developed COVID-19 vaccine candidate in the country.

Across the globe, Coronavirus has affected 1.80 crore people and taken 6.88 lakh lives. India ranks third in the worst-affected countries by the Coronavirus pandemic.
