FM Nirmala Sitharaman highlights success and future plans of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana

In acknowledgment of the vital role in supporting fishermen, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned the establishment of a dedicated fisheries department under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

Since the creation of this separated department, aquaculture production has experienced a twofold increase, contributing to a doubling of seafood exports since the fiscal year 2013-14.

To further elevate aquaculture productivity, the implementation of PMMSY is set to intensify, aiming to increase production from the current 3-5 tons per hectare. The goal includes doubling exports to ₹1 lakh crore, as well as generating 55 lakh employment opportunities in the near future.

As part of this initiative, five integrated aquaparks will be established, further enhancing the scope and efficiency of the PMMSY. The overarching objective of PMMSY, launched by the Government of India, is to establish a comprehensive framework and address infrastructural gaps in the fisheries sector, ensuring sustained growth and development.
