Azim Premji’s donation news ‘not true’, the donation was made in 2019

While the news of Azim Premji, the founder of Wipro donating Rs 50,000 crore spreads like a fire on the internet, the company comes forwards and tells that the reports are misleading as the donation was made last year in March.

It was in 2019 that Premji, who was at the position of chairman of Wipro at that time, had donated 34 percent of his shares worth Rs 52,750 crore to a charity under the Azim Premji Foundation.

The charity made him one of the biggest philanthropists in India’s history. In the past, he has contributed to charitable causes selflessly that include Wipro shares and other assets owned by him.

The sum of the philanthropist’s funding corpus was at 1.45 lakh crore at the time, which comprised 67 percent of economic possession of Wipro, the Premji Foundation stated last year.

Clarifying the rumours, Wipro shared, “The announcement was made in March 2019. No such announcement was made today.”

It was in the light of the corona outbreak, which people thought the news was true, though it just spread after one person tweeted about the donation.
