The Malayalam film “2018 – Everyone is a Hero” has been chosen as India’s official Oscar entry in the Best International Film category. This decision was reached by a jury led by famous director Girish Kasaravalli. The 96th Oscars, which will commemorate films released in 2023, will be held on March 10, 2024, in Los Angeles.
“2018” was picked to represent India at the Oscars from a list of 22 films that included “The Kerala Story,” “Vaalvi,” “Gadar 2,” and others. The picture Federation of India’s annual Oscar selection committee seeks to select the film that best symbolises India’s cinematic achievements and multiple language industries.
Despite having had films nominated in the past, India has never won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Among the notable Indian films that received final nominations were “Mother India” (1957), “Salaam Bombay!” (1988), and “Lagaan” (2001). Being selected as India’s representative at the Oscars carries distinction, but it also places a considerable burden on the film’s producers, as international exposure and reputation are critical in this highly competitive field.
Meanwhile, Malayalam youth hero Tovino Thomas has established himself as one of India’s most sought-after young actors. On Tuesday (Sept. 27), the actor received the Best Asian Actor Award at the Septimius Awards in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He won the award for his outstanding performance in the 2018 movie.
The film “2018,” directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, was also nominated for Best Asian Film. The film received both critical acclaim and box office success in 2023, with Tovino providing a gripping performance as the ex-serviceman Anoop.
