Pakistani actor Fawad Khan’s 8 year comeback to Bollywood has to wait as ‘Abir Gulal’ will not release in India

The release of ‘Abir Gulal’, a romantic drama starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Indian actress Vaani Kapoor, has been barred from theatrical release in India, according to sources from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) who spoke to news agency ANI.

The film, which was slated for release on May 9, has become the center of a major controversy following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists and injured several others. Public outrage against the attack led to a fresh wave of demands to boycott Pakistani artists, with ‘Abir Gulal’ bearing the brunt of the backlash due to Fawad Khan’s casting.

FWICE calls for strict action

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has reiterated its blanket ban on Pakistani artists and stated that it will take all necessary measures to prevent the release of ‘Abir Gulal’ in India. “We are committed to protecting the sentiments of our citizens and industry professionals. No Pakistani artist should be allowed to work in India,” the body said in its official communication.

Legal and public backdrop

While the Bombay High Court had previously dismissed a 2023 petition seeking a total ban on Pakistani artists, several film associations and political groups continue to oppose any form of collaboration.

The film’s teaser and subsequent promotional activities, including a song launch in Dubai on April 20 featuring both Khan and Kapoor, added fuel to the controversy. Hashtags demanding a ban on the film have trended across Indian social media platforms in recent days.

Fawad Khan responds

In response to the Pahalgam tragedy, Fawad Khan took to Instagram, stating, “Deeply saddened to hear the news of the heinous attack in Pahalgam. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims at this hour.”

Despite his statement, criticism continues to mount over the inclusion of Pakistani talent in Indian cinema during heightened geopolitical tensions.

What’s next?

While the official notification is yet to be issued, the I&B Ministry sources confirmed that the release of ‘Abir Gulal’ will not be permitted within Indian territory. The filmmakers have not yet issued a public statement in response to the development.
