Mirzapur Web Series: Allahabad HC stays arrest of producers Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani

Earlier, an FIR was filed against the makers of the web series Mirzapur, for defaming the city and outraging religious sentiments.

On Frinday (29th January), The Allahabad High Court stayed the arrest of ‘Mirzapur Series’ producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani.

While hearing a writ petition filed by Akhtar and Sidhwani, the Bench of Justice MK Gupta and Justice Subhash Chand also issued a notice to the state government and the complainant in the matter seeking their reply.

A first information report (FIR) was lodged against the petitioners Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani and others on 17th January 2021 at Kotwali Dehat Police Station, Mirzapur at the instance of a local Journalist Arvind Chaturvedi. The FIR was registered under sections 295-A, 504, 505 and 34 of IPC and 67-A of IT Act. The producers were accused of improperly visualising the city of Mirzapur and outraging religious belief.

However, while hearing the case, the petitioners’ counsels argued that there was no such malicious intention of outraging religious or social feelings.

The action crime thriller series Mirzapur took the audience along the dark world of guns, drugs and lawlessness. The series was launched on Amazon Prime Video.
