Legendary classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj’s passed away on 17th August at the age of 90. His funeral was held on Thursday in Mumbai, in the presence of close family members. Panditji’s body was repatriated from New Jersey on Wednesday.
The media coordinator of the family, Preetam Sharma, said that the last rites will take place at Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle. Sharma added that, Panditji will be cremated with state honours and be given a 21-gun salute.
Singer Shweta Pandit, who is also Pandit Jasraj’s granddaughter, had told Bombay Times that the family took all the necessary permissions required during the pandemic. She said, “We spoke almost every week in the last six months during the pandemic, since this was the one time when we were all at home. When the pandemic struck, he was in his New Jersey home with his students and he had to stay put there.”
Pandit ji is survived by his wife, Madhura, son Shaarang Pandit and a daughter Durga Jasraj. Both his kids are musicians.
The legendary vocalist was honoured with all three Padma awards – Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
