The bustling streets of Mumbai came to a somber standstill on Monday afternoon as thousands gathered to bid a final, tearful adieu to the legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle. The veteran artist, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 92, began her final journey from her residence toward the Shivaji Park Crematorium, where her last rites are to be performed with full State honors.
The “Moksh Rath,” a vehicle beautifully adorned with white flowers and a large portrait of the smiling singer, made its way through a sea of humanity. People from all walks of life lined the roads, many holding placards and chanting “Asha Tai Amar Rahe” (Long live Asha Tai), as they struggled to catch a last glimpse of the woman whose voice provided the soundtrack to their lives for over eight decades.

Earlier in the day, the atmosphere at her residence was heavy with grief as high-profile dignitaries arrived. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde paid a solemn visit, laying a wreath and offering support to the bereaved family. Joining him in the final tributes were former Union Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray, highlighting the immense respect she commanded across the political spectrum.
The film and sports fraternity also turned out in large numbers to honor the “Queen of Versatility.” A visibly shattered Sachin Tendulkar was seen among the mourners, alongside veteran stars like Helen and Asha Parekh. Younger icons, including Tabu and Riteish Deshmukh, also joined the procession, while actor Jackie Shroff offered a poignant tribute by carrying a small sapling.
As the procession reached the historic Shivaji Park – the same grounds where her sister, the late Lata Mangeshkar, was cremated – the air was thick with emotion. With her passing, an era of unparalleled musical excellence concludes, but as the crowds on the streets of Mumbai proved today, her melody remains eternal.
