Vidya Balan starrer Shakuntala Devi biopic to release on this date?

When theatres were shutting down as a preventive step to fight COVID-19, filmmakers were left with no choice than to go for an online release for their films that were ready to hit the theatres. Shoojit Sircar was the first one to go for an OTT release for his film ‘Gulabo-Sitabo’ after that it was announced that Vidya Balan’s Shakuntala Devi will get an online release too.

Vidya Balan earlier took to her Twitter to make the announcement of films Digital release. She wrote, “Delighted to announce that you will get to see #ShakuntalaDevi very soon on @PrimeVideo with all your loved ones. Thrilled that we will be able to entertain you in these unprecedented times. #WorldPremiereOnPrime #ShakuntalaDeviOnPrime @sonypicsprodns @Abundantia_Ent.”

Bollywood Hungama reported, “Shakuntala Devi is going to get released on July 31st on Amazon Prime.” Though there has been no official confirmation, if the sources are to be believed ‘Shakuntala Devi’ will become the second film to release on an OTT platform after Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana starrer ‘Gulabo-Sitabo’ which got released on June 12 on Amazon Prime.

‘Shakuntala Devi’ is a biopic of a lady with the same name, who was known as the ‘human computer’. Vidya Balan is portraying the titular role. The movie is written and helmed by Anu Menon. The film was wrapped up in November 2019 and was earlier slated to release on June 8, 2020, but got postponed due to the pandemic.

Vidya had shared, “I am extremely excited to play the human-computer, Shakuntala Devi, on the big screen. She was truly someone who embraced her individuality, had a strong feminist voice and braved many a naysayer to reach the pinnacle of success. But what truly fascinates me is that you wouldn’t normally associate a fun person with Math…and she completely turns that perception on its head,” Vidya Balan had shared in an earlier statement about portraying Shakuntala Devi onscreen.
