Are you a movie buff or a cinephile? Are you always on the lookout for some stories that can blow your mind? Want to watch some movies that are intriguing? Looking for some narratives that stand out from regular, superstar loaded, action-drama?
Then, you just landed on the right page! There are some gems which never got public attention. However, the right audience did sight these gems. And now, we categorised them in this listicle let’s look at these movies!
Salaam Bombay (1998)
Helmed by director Mira Nair, this movie was released in 1988, is a gem specifically because of the time it was made! Mira Nair, instead of going to some trained actors, rather relied on street children for her film. A story which conveys that survival in Mumbai is barely possible, where people living in slums and streets are always at the edge of the disaster and if seen from a window of a taxi, the despair and plight is not recognized easily. This is a well thought, and executed movie, with real locations. At some places, Mira also captured the rawness and emotions of characters by hiding the camera. This movie was nominated for the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ in the Academy Awards.
Haasil (2003)
The debut film of Tigmanshu Dhulia as a director, Haasil saw some traumatic lows and highs in these 17 years. This movie was rejected by people on straight terms, but after 14 years it received a cult status. This movie has some brilliant performances by Irrfan Khan, Ranvijay Singh, Jimmy Shergil, Ashutosh Rana among others. The movie is based on students’ politics and shot in Allahabad University. It is raw, real and not everyone’s cup of tea.
Water (2005)
Directed by Deepa Mehta, this is the third film in the sequence after Fire and Earth. Deepa Mehta, through her films, told stories which broke social norms, away from stereotypical thinking. Her narratives are sharp and questions the system we live in. Water is one of them. This movie depicts the plight of widows and inhuman treatment that are done by the male-chauvinist Hindu society. It’s heart-aching to know that such practices are still active in this era.
Ship of Theseus (2013)
Provided by the Theseus Paradox, this movie will take you on a journey of realisation. It tells three stories one after another and with no relevance but a common thread that is decoded at the end. Anand Gandhi, who has written and directed this film, has left thought-provoking conversations that will, at times, make you uncomfortable. Much on a philosophical side, this movie is worth your time.
Kadvi Hawa (2017)
A fine actor, a brilliant story and effortless direction, is what makes an acclaimed movie. Kadvi Hawa, though talks about climate change, it also surfaced on farmers’ suicide which gives you Goosebumps. It’s an eye-opener for us on the plight of those, who serve as the backbone. Directed by Nila Madhab Panda, Kadvi Hawa comes to life because of the fine performance of Sanjay Mishra. It’s filled with dark humour but the climax scene will give you chills.
Special Mention: There are a lot of movies in Bollywood that proves the capability of Hindi cinema to take up a competition with any other film industry. The problem lies with the reception. Hence, apart from these five movies, some other movies that are worth your time are:- Chittagong (2012) directed by Bedabrata Pain; Court (2014) directed by Chaitanya Tamhane; Gulal (2009) and Black Friday (2004) directed by Anurag Kashyap.
