Nagesh Kukunoor to helm ‘Trail of an Assassin,’ a show centered on Rajiv Gandhi’s death

Even though the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi is well-known, there are many untold stories that lie beneath this horrific incident. A crime procedural based on author Anirudhya Mitra’s newly released book, “Ninety Days: The True Story of the Hunt for Rajiv Gandhi’s Assassin,” published by HarperCollins Publishers India Private Limited, has been approved by Applause Entertainment, a project of the Aditya Birla Group, to throw light on the period following of this horrible act.

The content company has now acquired the rights to Anirudhya Mitra’s novel in addition to recently announcing an enticing slate that includes “Tanaav,” “Gandhi,” and “Scam 2003.”

Anirudhya, a former journalist, was among the first to report on the case and break numerous exclusive stories while the search for the assassins was ongoing.

The series will provide a detailed description of how the CBI’s Special Investigation Team deciphered the murderous scheme, located the perpetrators, and tracked the mastermind to his last hiding place. The movie is being directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, a renowned filmmaker and National Award winner whose previous partnership with Applause Entertainment for “City of Dreams” was a big success.
