The Korean wave, also known as the Hallyu wave is a word used to characterize the South Korean entertainment industry’s influence on the world.

South Korean films are captivating fans all around the world, from experimental features to successful series streaming on OTT platforms like Netflix. It all started way before when director Bong Joon-ho directed South Korea’s Parasite made history by becoming the first non-English language movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The Oscars, according to Bong, are “very local.”

Because of their unique concepts and theme-based series and movies, they always resonate with average people’s lives and their imaginations.

South Korean actor Yang Mal-bok, whose latest film ‘The Apartment with Two Women’ opened at the Berlinale in February speaks about how cultural monopolization made the Korean entertainment industry conservative for several years.

Yang added, “This was happening long before OTT (over-the-top) platforms and simple subtitling.”

However, the performer claims that South Korean films have now “elevated” and that “Hallyu is here to stay” as her latest independent movie tours foreign film festivals.

When questioned about Hallyu, Yang’s co-star in ‘The Apartment with Two Women,’ Jung Bo-ram, remarked, “It’s the universalist themes of Korean society” that help propel South Korean films’ international popularity.
