The actor, who is dating 22-year-old model Gigi Hadid, who is part Palestinian, described the experience to the Evening Standard, describing how he went through “three security checks” before boarding the plane in London.

Alongside Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and other contestants from the 2010 X Factor, Zayn transformed overnight from an ordinary teenager to a true superstar. In addition, the heartthrob recalled the bigger picture at the time, saying: “I was 17, my first time in America, jet-lagged off the plane, confused. The second time, the same thing took place.”

Zayn, who is now featured in the latest Versus Versace ad campaign with Bella, the younger sister of his fiancée, seems to handle the unnerving event in stride – noting the ‘level of caution that needs to be taken.’ Malik, 24, was born in the U.K.

Malik, 24, was raised as a Muslim by his parents after being born in the U.K. His mother converted to Islam after their marriage, while his father is from Pakistan. Malik stated that he had “a great sense of pride – and responsibility – in his background.”

“I’m not currently practicing, but I was raised in the Islamic faith, so it will always be with me,” he said. “I identify a lot with the culture. But I’m just me. I don’t want to be defined by my religion or my cultural background.”
