The Cannes Film Festival 2021 has confirmed the jury who will assemble with Spike Lee in deciding the winners of this year’s event. The “BlacKkKlansman” Oscar winner is performing as the 2021 jury president and will be accompanied by director Mati Diop, singer-songwriter Mylène Farmer, writer-director Jessica Hausner, actress-director Mélanie Laurent, writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho, actor Tahar Rahim, and ‘Parasite’ actor Song Kang-ho. The Jury will reveal its list of winners on Saturday, July 17 during the Cannes Closing Ceremony.
Song Kang-ho is also believed to attend Cannes as a cast member for the disaster film Emergency Declaration, which has been documented in the ‘Out of Competition category along with five other movies, including ‘The Velvet Underground’ by Todd Haynes, ‘Stillwater’ by Tom McCarthy and ‘De Son Vivant’ by Emmanuelle Bercot.
Almost all the jury members have taken part in the last edition of the Festival. Song’s 2019 multiple Oscar-winning movie ‘Parasite‘, directed by his frequent companion Bong Joon-ho, had its premiere at the 2019 edition of the film gala where it became the first South Korean film to win the coveted Palme d’Or trophy.
Gyllenhaal, who just made her directorial debut with “The Lost Daughter,” is best recognized for her parts in “Donnie Darko,” “Secretary,” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.” She received her first Oscar nomination with “Crazy Heart” and earned a Golden Globe for her performance in the miniseries “The Honourable Woman.” She went on to produce and lead in the HBO series “The Deuce” and the suspense “The Kindergarten Teacher.”
