95th Academy Awards 2023: India is contending for three medals at the most prestigious awards ceremony in the world, the 95th Academy Awards, this week. All That Breathes, The Elephant Whisperers, and RRR’s song Naatu Naatu are up for awards for best documentary feature, best original song, and best documentary short subject, respectively.
The 95th Academy Awards’ Best Documentary Feature Film category was not won by the Indian documentary film All That Breathes from 2022. The film, which HBO has since bought, was up against Navalny, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Fire of Love, A House Built of Splinters, and other contenders. Writing with Fire, a film by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, was nominated for an Oscar last year but fell short to Questlove’s Summer of Soul.
The film All That Breathes, directed by Shaunak Sen, depicts the story of two Muslim brothers who reside in Delhi and have dedicated their entire lives to saving a species of bird called the black kite, which has been going extinct owing to the toxic environment. International viewers, who have already given the film good reviews, were moved by the boys’ compassion. A poetic homage to persistence, All That Breathes leverages two brothers’ hard attempts to make a larger argument about finding triumph within tragedy. It currently has an astounding 99 percent rating on review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes.
