Kat Dennings has opened up about sharing an emotional moment with Tim Allen while filming their new sitcom, Shifting Gears. Speaking on the Not Gonna Lie podcast on March 13, Dennings recalled that both she and Allen were apprehensive about a particularly emotional scene, where they had to cry on cue. However, she noted that once they looked at each other, the emotions came naturally, making the moment feel real.
The sitcom follows Matt, played by Allen, a widowed car restoration shop owner whose estranged daughter, played by Dennings, moves in with her children. Dennings explained that while the show is filled with comedy, it also tackles themes of grief and real-life challenges. Performing raw and emotional scenes in front of an audience, she admitted, felt like a unique mix of theater and burlesque.
Dennings praised Allen, 71, for his immersive acting style, describing him as a deeply present performer who fully experiences each moment on screen. She contrasted this with actors who are often preoccupied with their next lines, emphasizing how Allen’s approach enhances their on-screen chemistry.
For Dennings, Shifting Gears also marks a personal milestone, as it is her first time portraying a mother on screen. While she initially found the idea daunting, she expressed enthusiasm about exploring this new role. Drawing from her real-life experiences as a stepmother, godmother, and aunt, she felt excited to take on the challenge.
Acknowledging Allen’s television legacy, Dennings shared that the opportunity to star alongside him in his next sitcom was one she couldn’t pass up.
Shifting Gears airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
