Is Deadpool a mutant?

As the release of Deadpool & Wolverine draws near, it’s no surprise that folks are digging deeper into the character’s backstory. And one burning question that’s been causing the occasional headache is whether our favorite Merc with the Mouth is indeed a mutant.

Now, when it comes to his partner in crime from the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe flick, Wolverine, the answer’s a no-brainer. Logan’s the poster child for mutantkind in the X-Men movies, his storyline revolving around those special abilities that have shaped his entire existence.

But what about Deadpool? Is this red-and-black-clad, wisecracking oddball also a mutant? And if so, does he bring anything else to the table besides his knack for making dad jokes cool again?

How Deadpool got his powers

Yep, you guessed it—Deadpool is indeed a mutant in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Fox X-Men universe. But here’s the kicker: he looked just like your average Joe until Ajax and Angel Dust came along and kickstarted his mutant journey. In a series of brutal experiments that pushed his body to the absolute brink, they shot him up with a serum designed to activate his latent mutant genes. And let’s just say, extreme stress and a whole lot of adrenaline were the spark that ignited the Deadpool we all know and love.

The end result? A seriously powerful regenerative healing factor that’s practically off the charts. But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows—along with his newfound immortality, Wade Wilson ended up looking like “Freddy Krueger face-f**ked a topographical map of Utah,” in the immortal words of his buddy Weasel.

But wait, there’s more! Along with that nifty healing factor, Deadpool’s packing some serious heat in the superhuman department. Think super speed, strength, durability, and agility—all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a top-tier mutant. Oh, and let’s not forget his “medium awareness,” which basically translates to breaking the fourth wall like a boss, even though in-universe, it’s more of a psychic ability that lets him play the role of a fictional character in a movie.

So there you have it, folks. Deadpool’s mutant credentials are legit, and with powers like his, you can bet he’s bringing his A-game to Deadpool & Wolverine when it hits theaters on July 26, 2024.
