BLACKPINK becomes the first girl band to win ‘Best Group’ award in 24 years at 2023 MTV VMAs

BLACKPINK has been named Group of the Year at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.

The VMAs, which took place on September 13, have captivated everyone’s attention with their nominations and victories. K-pop groups have been dominating the awards show, with many prizes. Now, the famed K-pop girl group BLACKPINK has won the coveted Group of the Year award at the VMAs, becoming the first girl group of the century to do so.

BLACKPINK has broken a 24-year-old record by becoming the second female group in history to win Group of the Year at the VMAs, following in the footsteps of TLC, who won the accolade in 1999.Even though the group was not physically present at the ceremony, supporters took to social media to praise and celebrate the group’s important award win.

BLACKPINK, a four-member female group signed to YG Entertainment, made their South Korean music debut in 2016.

Their most recent albums, BORN PINK and THE ALBUM, have collected over 2 billion Spotify streams globally, a phenomenal achievement. BLACKPINK is the only girl group in history to have accomplished this achievement.

BORN PINK and THE ALBUM both set records for the quickest albums recorded by a girl group to reach this extraordinary milestone.

Furthermore, THE ALBUM became the first album by a K-pop girl group to reach 2 billion Spotify listens in just 17 months after its debut. This achievement outperforms the streaming stats of UK girl band Little Mix’s Glory Days and American group Fifth Harmony’s 7/27.

Aside from their tour success, BLACKPINK also gave fans a new tune titled THE GIRLS, which is featured on the soundtrack for their mobile game, BLACKPINK: THE GAME.
