Birthright: Family drama series in works at Netflix from Marissa Jo Cerar

Birthright, a soapy family drama project from Women of the Movement and Black cake creator Marissa Jo Cerar, has landed at Netflix, in a competitive situation with a significant other deal, as per the reports by Deadline. Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, where Marissa is under an overall deal, is the studio.

The series, which has been written by Marissa, journalist Maya James is stunned when she is made heir to one of the largest and most profitable liquor businesses in America, but it’s a gift that upends her life as she uncovers the many secrets buried by her benefactors.

Following Women of the Movement which ran on ABC in 2022, and Black Cake, which premiered on Hulu in November, Birthright has been the third major project for Marissa under Kapital Entertainment. However, post the merger of Hulu and Disney+, Black Cake’s fate is yet to be officially confirmed by Disney streamer.

The series will also mark return of Marissa to Netflix, who has earlier worked on the streaming giant’s 13 Reasons Why.
