Veteran singer Sandhya Mukherjee passes away; she shared a great bond with Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Ji’s friend, veteran singer Sandhya Mukherjee passed away at the age of 90 due to cardiac arrest.

Veteran singer Sandhya Mukherjee, also known as Sandhya Mukhopadhyay passed away at the age of 90 after a cardiac arrest on Tuesday.

She was in hospital since the last week of January due to ill health. She was put on vasopressor support earlier in the day as her blood pressure dropped. “She suffered a massive heart attack at around 7.30 PM following which she expired,” the senior hospital official told PTI.

The veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar also passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday. Her body was cremated at the Shivaji Park in Mumbai. Lata Mangeshkar Ji was honoured by wrapping her body in the tricolour flag.

Lata Ji and Sandhya Ji were considered as very good friends. They also sang a duet Bol Papihe Bol from the film Tarana. During the recording, they used to visit each other, sit, laugh and talk to each other.

Lata ji’s battle in the Bollywood industry and how she managed to gain fame there shook Sandhya Mukherjee.

It was rumoured that Lata Ji stopped the Bengali singer to enter the Bollywood industry. While, the singer made it clear in her autobiography that these are just rumours, their relationship was very good.

Singer Sandhya Mukherjee refused an offer of a Padma Shri on the eve of Republic Day in 2022. She refused saying it is more deserving of a junior artiste and not someone of her stature.

Sandhya Ji got married in 1966 to Shyamal Gupta, who was a Bengali poet. They have a daughter, Soumi Sengupta.

She has sung Hindi songs in more than 17 films.  Some of her popular Hindi songs include Aayee Mere Jeevan Ki Saanjh Suhani (1948), Bol Papihe Bol Kaun Hai Tera Chitchor (1951), Jungle Mangal (1953), Maine Jo Lee Angrayee Teri Mehfil (1956), and Tose Naina Laage Re Saanwariya (1966).
