Supreme Court declines Ranveer Allahbadia’s request for urgent hearing citing summons from Assam police

The Supreme Court on Friday declined the request by Ranveer Allahbadia for an urgent hearing on his pleas to quash multiple FIRs filed against him over his alleged controversial remark.

The Apex Court stated that the matter would be taken up for hearing in the next two to three days.

A bench comprising of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar took note of the submission of the social media influencer’s lawyer, Abhinav Chandrachud, and said that the plea would be listen in two to three days.

Chandrachud sought an urgent hearing of the case on the grounds that Ranveer is being summoned by the Assam police today.

The popular YouTuber is facing legal trouble over his alleged distasteful comment made during Samay Raina’s show, India’s Got Latent. He has been charged under various sections.

What charges are being faced by Ranveer Allahbadia?

Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 Act for insulting a woman’s modesty through words, gestures, sounds, or objects. It also includes intruding a woman’s privacy.

Section 196 of BNS of 2023 which criminalizes speech or action that promotes hatred or enmity between groups.

Section 299 of BNS that deals with deliberate and malicious acts that insults or attempt to insult the religious beliefs of any class of people in India.

Section 296 of BNS 2023, obscene acts and songs in public place.

Section 67 of the Information Technology Act 2000, which criminalizes the publication or transmission of obscene material in electronic form.
