Shreya Goshal shared that she feels embarrassed upon witnessing young girls dancing and singer to her “raunchy songs” such as Chikni Chameli. The singer argued that girls aged 5 to 6 sing the song without even understanding the lyrics.
In a conversation with Canadian YouTuber Lilly Singh, Shreya said, “I have a handful of songs which could be borderline raunchy, like Chikni Chameli. There is a fine line between being sensuous, sexy, or being out there, making yourself objectified, or women in general. Why am I a little conscious about it now? It’s because I see young girls sing these songs without understanding the lyrics.”
She added, “It’s a fun song, they are dancing to it, they come and say, ‘Can I sing this in front of you?’ Then I feel very embarrassed that a little girl, who is probably 5-6 years old, is singing those lyrics. It doesn’t suit, it doesn’t sound good, I don’t want that.”
She added that she is now conscious about such songs, and even if she agrees to sing them, she would prefer for it to be well written. She also explained that if a woman would have written a song, it would have been in a much gracious manner, as perspective matters.
Shreya continued that in a country like India, it is important to have benchmarks because the films have a huge impact on our lives.
