Saroj Khan’s funeral at Malad cementry, prayer meet next week, says Choreographer’s daughter

On early Friday morning, three-time award winner Saroj Khan died due to cardiac arrest. She was laid to rest at Malad cementry by her family at 7 am.

Saroj’s daughter Sukaina Khan told PTI that the family will hold a prayer meet soon. “We buried her at around 7 am. The prayer meeting will be held after three days,” she said.

The legendary dancer wasn’t keeping well for sometime. She was admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital on June 20, when she complained about breathing issues. The mandatory COVID-19 tests were done, the result came negative.

In her four decade long career as a choreographer, she has worked on around 2,000 Bollywood songs. Khan’s best work was with actors Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit, who were the prominent dancing stars of the ‘80s and ‘90s. She made a debut as a choreographer with Geeta Mera Naam in 1974 but it took Sridevi’s Hawa Hawai song in 1987 film Mr India for her to receive acclaim as a dance choreographer.

The legendary choreographer migrated to India from Pakistan after partition. She entered the film industry as a child actor, at the age of three. She was born as Nirmala and later on she converted to Islam, learnt dance while working under film choreographer B Sohanlal. She also worked as background dancer before she made it big.

Saroj Khan’s last work was with Madhuri Dixit in Kalank (2019). She choreographed for Tabaah Hogaye, which was praised by the audience.
