Karan Johar refers to Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s argument while addressing the significance of gender politics in films

Karan Johar used the identity of Sandeep Reddy Vanga while emphasising the need for filmmakers to adapt to the changing ideas around gender politics in cinema.

Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, has gone viral on social media, with many criticising the film’s toxic masculinity and misogyny. Karan Johar discussed the significance of gender politics in film in an interview with Film Companion. He referred Sandeep Reddy Vanga. In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the director used his own mistakes as an example of how crucial it is to change with age.

During the Director’s Adda for Film Companion, Karan Johar talked about how much has changed in the present generation and how difficult it is to write a love story for them. Karan stated that he wanted to address several issues within the framework of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Cancel culture is one among them. In addition, he addressed gender politics, saying, “The gender politics of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I understand, is incorrect as opposed to the gender politics of Rocky Aur Rani. Because now I have evolved, now I have understood.”

“Then you have someone like Sandeep Reddy Vanga telling you that why are you listening to anybody? Just do your own thing! I feel like you got to understand that with age comes evolution. Being a parent specifically, parent of twins, a boy and a girl… you understand how important gender politics are. You don’t want to make those mistakes. You don’t want to tell your children that you wear pink hoodie and you wear blue. Its okay for both of them to wear pink and blue. Also, you don’t tell the boy that don’t cry like a girl”, added Karan.

The film Animal portrays a violent world against the backdrop of a strained relationship between Ranbir Kapoor’s character, Ranvijay Singh, and Anil Kapoor’s character, Balbir Singh. Prior to its December 1st release, the CBFC awarded the movie an A certificate. The movie’s box office performance has been great.
