The 71- year- old broke an international treaty by illegally importing bags made from caimans and pythons.

As per the officials, Nancy had enlisted her relative to bring in the handbags and the totes into the United States.

Both Colombia and U.S. are signatories to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which protects caimans, the creature similar to alligator, and pythons, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The trade for caimans and pythons is not banned, however, it is strictly regulated under CITES rules.

The import permit, which is required by individuals or businesses for bringing the products, was never acquired by Nancy.

The officials say that between February 2016 and April 2019, Nancy had employed friends, family, and employees to transport the bags on passenger airlines to the U.S. before sending them to her showroom in New York.
