Born in Amritsar, Punjab, Aruna completed her schooling at the local school of Amritsar and spent most of his childhood there. She married to Hari Om Bhatia, who was an Army officer. After marriage, she moved to Delhi and later to Mumbai, when her husband left army to be an accountant in UNICEF. 

She has two children, son Akshay Kumar and daughter Alka Bhatia. Her son Akshay Kumar is a famous Bollywood Actor, married to Actress, writer Twinkle Khanna, who is daughter of Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia. Her daughter Alka Bhatia is married to Surender Hiranandani in 2012, who is a real-estate business tycoon and the co-founder and managing director of Hiranandani Group. Surender is 15 years older than Alka.

Aruna Bhatia is also a co-partner at Hari Om Productions. She has produced movies like Singh Is Kinng (2008), Patiala House (2011), OMG – Oh My God! (2012), Holiday: A Soldier is Never Off Duty (2014), Airlift (2016), Rustom (2016), Naam Shabana (2017), and Toilet -Ek Prem Katha (2017), Chumbak (2018), Mission Mangal (2019) and many others. She was also part of Akshay’s upcoming projects Ram Setu and Sooryavanshi.
