The nation mourns as the “Melody Queen” falls silent. Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at the age of 92. The veteran artist breathed her last at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital following a battle with age-related ailments and multi-organ failure. As news of her demise spread, a wave of grief swept through the political and entertainment corridors of India.

On Monday morning, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde arrived at the singer’s residence to pay his last respects. Shinde, representing the state government, offered a floral tribute to the mortal remains of the Padma Vibhushan recipient. Speaking to the media, Shinde expressed his profound grief, stating that the passing of Asha Tai marks the “end of a golden era” in Indian music. He emphasized that her contribution to the cultural fabric of Maharashtra and India remains unparalleled, and her voice will continue to inspire generations.

The atmosphere at the Bhosle residence was somber as high-profile figures from various walks of life gathered to bid farewell. Former Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde was also among the early visitors, seen paying his respects and console the grieving family.

The film and sports fraternity also turned out in large numbers. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was seen visibly emotional, breaking down in tears as he paid his final tribute to the woman he often referred to as a mother figure. From the film industry, veteran actor Helen arrived to support the family, sharing a poignant moment with Asha Bhosle’s son. Other notable attendees included actress Tabu, actor Jackie Shroff—who arrived carrying a sapling as a symbolic tribute—and Riteish Deshmukh.

Political leaders like Uddhav Thackeray, accompanied by his family and MP Arvind Sawant, also visited to offer their condolences. Musical stalwarts, including Anuradha Paudwal, Talat Aziz, and Amit Kumar (son of the late Kishore Kumar), were present to honor the legacy of a singer who recorded over 12,000 songs in a career spanning eight decades.

Asha Bhosle’s final journey is scheduled to conclude at Shivaji Park, where she will be cremated with full state honors, reflecting the monumental impact she had on the nation’s identity.
