General Bipin Rawat is set to visit Russia and the United States in his first foreign visit after becoming the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
“There is a conference of the CDS-rank officers of the Shanghai Cooperation Agreement member countries. China and Pakistan are also part of this grouping,” senior defence official was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
The conference will be focusing on addressing issues related to regional security. The crisis in Afghanistan will be brought up during the discussion. The CDS will also be witnessing activities of the respective armed forces taking part in the SCO peace mission drills held in Russia. The Indian Army and Air Force will also take part in the exercise.
The trip is said to take place in the coming week. After returning from Russia, Rawat will be leaving for the US to meet his counterpart and other American military leadership at the Pentagon.
The two countries have been building military relationships over the years and held multiple military exercises and hardware cooperation. Rawat took to office as CDS on December 31, 2019, and has been dealing with foreign invites to integrate the defence forces as joined fighting troops. The Indian military saw a significant shift in senior-level structures under the Modi government. The centre is now on the theorisation of the fighting forces and drawing in more capabilities and unity among the three services.
