Spain’s multinational telecommunications company, Telefonica has signed a contract with Japanese electronic commerce and online retailing company, Rakuten.
The companies have joined hands to develop a state of the art 5G radio network system that will use Artificial Intelligence.

This technology will use commodified hardware and cloud-software. This will radically cut costs for telecom operators because they will no longer have to use proprietary equipment.
Telefonica’s Chief Technology & Information Officer, Enrique Blanco said, “We are not building a competitive tool with Open RAN. We are trying to build an ecosystem.”
