Reliance targets to increase production domestically to sideline Chinese smartphone industries

Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani is planning to surprise the country’s smartphone industry with his plan of introducing aggressive prices and certain ideas that might make him the commanding force in the smartphone industry. He is planning to collaborate with local assemblers like Dixon Technologies India, Lava International and Karbonn Mobiles to boost the production of Indian companies. People familiar with this matter commented that the inexpensive phones will be marketed with low-cost wireless plans from Reliance Jio, parent company’s carrier.

Reliance is targeting to sell 150 million to 200 million phones over two years to encourage production in the domestic industries. According to Mohindroo’s association, India assembled an estimated 165 million smartphones in the year ended March, and about an equal number of basic feature phones. In this way, Jio can become one of the leading smartphone brands of 2021. “Reliance’s fourth-generation wireless gadgets — one tier below 5G — are aimed at an estimated 350 million users of basic or feature phones that now dominate India’s industry”, reported by NDTV.

Reliance could increase the prospects for Jio Platforms if it becomes successful in popularising the new gadget. This device has a large potential market which would side line the share of Chinese phonemaking industries such as Xiomi.
