Reliance Retail: An emerging force in the Indian retail market

Today, 29th August in the 45th annual general meeting of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), the chairperson and managing director Mukesh Ambani announced her daughter, Isha Ambani as the leader of the retail segment of the conglomerate, Reliance Retail.

This comes after Isha’s brother Akash’s appointment as the chairperson of Reliance Jio Infocomm in June this year.

Reliance Retail has over 45 divisions and subsidiaries that include, Reliance Smart, Reliance Fresh, Reliance Digital, Reliance Trends, Jio Mart, AJIO and several more.

Speaking at the AGM, Isha announced that Reliance Retail has 200 million (20 crores), regular customers, along with 520 million walks in’s in their stores annual which grew by 18% since last year.

She mentioned that the digital platforms garnered 4.5 virtual visits annually with over 6 lakh orders daily.

Additionally, she stated that Jio Mart, Reliance Retail’s grocery delivery service, delivers to 260 towns, and 2500 new stores, has doubled warehousing and operates over 15,000 stores.

The company generated employment for 1.5 lakh last year bringing its workforce to 3.6 lakh.

Mentioning their E-Commerce fashion website AJIO, she stated that AJIO had been operating in 3500 towns and had tied up with over 8000 merchants and sold 43 crore garments with 80% repeat customers.

Talking about recent acquisitions and expansions, she addressed the meeting by talking about partnering with luxury brands to cater to a wealthier section of the society, NetMeds’ pan-India presence and tie-ups with Freshpik (a gourmet grocery chain) and 7/11.

The objective of this business will be to develop and deliver products and solve every Indian’s daily needs, with high-quality products at affordable pricing, she said.

Besides, Reliance Retail will start marketing goods produced by Indian artisans.

“As part of our commitment to India’s rich culture and heritage, we will soon start marketing quality goods produced by tribals and other marginalised communities across India,” Isha Ambani said.

In addition to giving people a profitable chance for employment and entrepreneurship, this will also aid in the preservation of the skills, expertise, and ability of Indian artisans, particularly women.

Reliance Retail has added more than 2,500 outlets this year to bring its total to over 15,000, covering a 42 million square foot operational area.

“During the year, we strengthened our own brands’ presence by launching several new products across categories of Staples, Home, Personal Care and General Merchandise. Further, we launched our WhatsApp-JioMart partnership,” said Isha.

Additionally, Isha Ambani also demonstrated the aforementioned partnership by placing an order on Jio Mart via WhatsApp.
