As many members of the society do not have the wherewithal, to verify the veracity of content, debates and posts on platforms like Facebook have the potential to polarize the society, as observed by the Supreme Court of India while pronouncing the verdict. It also added that social media platforms like Facebook are equipped with the power and potential to influence people across borders.

As nothing except summons has happened, while adding that the plea filed by the petitioners is premature, the court further said that an option to not answer the questions of the committee shall have to be examined.

The court also mentioned that the Facebook representatives could be well within their rights to refuse to appear if the committee goes beyond the remit.
