The entrance to Lloyd’s of London was blocked by Extinction Rebellion demonstrators this morning in protest of the insurance industry’s support for the fossil fuel industry.

On Tuesday morning, around 7 a.m., demonstrators gathered outside the insurance giant’s Lyme Street office and barred staff from entering.

The goal, according to XR, was to close Lloyd’ss for the day. The organisation wants the company to stop insuring fossil-fuel projects.

It specifically mentioned the Trans Mountain Pipeline – and oil pipeline – extension in Canada, which the group argues is covered by Lloyd’s marketplace insurance.

The protest is part of a week of action in the capital by XR to raise awareness about the climate problem.

XR held a nonviolence training camp in London on Monday to prepare new recruits for an upcoming wave of protests.

After organising big demonstrations throughout the capital over the weekend, the climate change group convened a meeting in Hyde Park on Monday morning.

The Metropolitan Police claimed 38 activists were arrested on Sunday after groups of protesters sat in the road to impede traffic on Lambeth and Vauxhall Bridges.

Meanwhile, on the ninth day of action, Just Stop Oil claimed to have blocked oil supply at three locations. The group’s actions, according to police, are “exceptionally risky” and put themselves and policemen in “unacceptable” danger.

People used superglue, chains, and bike locks to block around twenty-five entrances to Lloyd’s during the demonstration. Employees who were already inside were allowed to leave.

Climbers also ascended the historic building’s exterior, dropping two banners that read “End Fossil Fuels Now” and “Insure Climate Justice.”

Others slapped ‘Stop Insuring Trans Mountain’ stickers on the windows. The Dirty Scrubbers, Tea Ladies, CorpRats, and Orchestrated Discontent performed outside as well.

“We’re here to demand an end to all new fossil fuel investments and insurance”. Said Clare Walmsley, an Extinction Rebellion representative. They are causing climate disaster floods, famine, wildfires, and death by subsidising the world’s most dangerous fossil fuel projects.
