How FIFO inflates your tax bill

India’s tax system follows FIFO – First In, First Out. This means when you sell shares, the system assumes you’re selling your oldest holdings first, even if your intention was to sell recent trades.

Here’s a simple example:

You buy 100 shares at ₹100 each for long-term investment.
Later, you buy 50 shares at ₹180 each for short-term trading.
A few weeks later, you sell the 50 shares at ₹200 each.

What you think your profit is:

Trading profit = ₹20 per share (₹200 – ₹180).

What the tax system says your profit is:

Since FIFO applies, it counts the ₹100 long-term shares as sold first.
Taxable profit = ₹100 per share (₹200 – ₹100).

So instead of being taxed on ₹1,000 profit (50 × ₹20), you’re taxed on ₹5,000 profit (50 × ₹100).

Illuminating about the Disaster Relief Mobile App, Venugopal Naidu Puvvada said, “We are planning to launch this revolutionary app in disaster response for Bharat. Our goal is to connect 10 crore rural citizens with real-time alerts, helpline access, and rescue planning using just a simple smartphone interface. We are eyeing AI-driven disaster mapping to pinpoint high-risk zones.”

Bridging the Urban-rural Rescue Gap

India’s rural belts, especially in disaster-prone states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Odisha and West Bengal, have long suffered from weak disaster communication frameworks. Indian government to investigate Telegram over extortion and gambling activities

Telegram is being investigated for criminal activities like extortion and gambling and the messaging app may potentially be banned based on the findings of the investigation, a government official has told Moneycontrol.

The revelation was made public shortly after 39-year-old Pavel Durov, the creator and CEO of Telegram, was arrested in Paris on August 24 in relation to the moderation policies of the app. According to reports, he was put under arrest for not stopping illegal activity on the app.

On August 25, a government official informed Moneycontrol, “The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) (under MHA) and MeitY have been looking into P2P communications on Telegram.”

According to the official, the ministry of home affairs and the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) were conducting an investigation that was mainly looking into criminal activities including gambling and extortion.

The official stated that the decision would be based on the results of the investigation, but he did not rule out banning the app, which has more than 5 million registered users in India.

“Users need to select a ‘specific group of people’ to share their location with, such as ‘Close Friends or only followers they follow back,'” said Christine Pai, a Meta spokesperson, to The Verge.

Although Instagram emphasizes safety and user control, there are still questions about how widely location sharing might become and how long posts will stay visible on the map. Pai did not immediately address these issues.

“Instagram’s feature is currently available only as a ‘small test’ in select markets,” Pai mentioned. “It’s an opt-in tool with controls for location sharing. ‘As always, we are building this feature with safety in mind.'”

This new location-based feature follows Instagram’s pattern of adopting ideas from other platforms. For example, Instagram’s Stories were inspired by Snapchat, Reels by TikTok, and Threads by Twitter.

Instagram has previously experimented with location-based features, such as the private photo map introduced in 2012, which showed users’ photos based on their locations. However, this feature was discontinued in 2016 due to low usage.

If Instagram rolls out this new map feature more widely, it could change how users interact with location-based content and potentially raise new privacy issues, depending on how the controls and sharing options are set up.

Starting soon, the platform will use “views” as the primary metric for all types of content, including Reels, Stories, photos, and more. This update, announced on Instagram’s creators account, is expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s chief, explained that traditionally, different metrics were used for different content formats, which made it harder to get a clear picture of overall content performance. By focusing on “views,” Instagram aims to simplify and standardize how creators track their content’s success.

What’s the Difference Between Views and Reach?

In a video accompanying the announcement, Mosseri clarified that “views” and “reach” are different metrics. “Views” count the number of times a piece of content is watched, even if the same user views it multiple times. On the other hand, “reach” measures how many unique users see the content. While views will now be highlighted as the main metric, Mosseri also suggested keeping an eye on “sends per reach” to gauge how well content is performing.

This shift reflects Meta’s broader strategy to prioritize views as a key performance indicator. For example, Threads, Meta’s other platform, now shows total view counts for posts. This trend is also seen on Twitter, now known as X, which has emphasized views under Elon Musk’s leadership.

By standardizing metrics and focusing on views, Instagram hopes to give creators a clearer and more unified understanding of their content’s impact across all formats.
