The Government of India has assured that the country’s foodgrain reserves remain robust, with buffer stocks of wheat and rice...

The Government of India has assured that the country’s foodgrain reserves remain robust, with buffer stocks of wheat and rice currently standing at nearly three times the prescribed norms. The statement comes amid global supply uncertainties and rising geopolitical tensions affecting commodity markets.

According to C. Shikha, Joint Secretary in the Department of Food and Public Distribution under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, India currently holds approximately 602 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of foodgrain stocks. This includes around 222 LMT of wheat and 380 LMT of rice.

Officials indicated that these levels are more than sufficient to meet the requirements of the Public Distribution System (PDS), which provides subsidised food grains to millions of beneficiaries across the country. The available stock is also deemed adequate to handle any unforeseen emergency situations.

The government’s assurance is backed by consistent procurement efforts and improved domestic agricultural output. In particular, higher mustard production has contributed to strengthening edible oil availability within the country, reducing dependency pressures.

In addition to domestic supply, India has maintained steady imports from key global partners to ensure supply stability. These partners include Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, Ukraine, Argentina, and Brazil. These imports primarily support edible oil and other essential commodity requirements.

Government officials emphasised that overall supply conditions remain stable, with no immediate concerns regarding shortages or disruptions. Continuous monitoring mechanisms are in place to track both domestic production trends and international market developments.

Experts note that maintaining higher buffer stocks is a strategic move, particularly at a time when global supply chains face periodic disruptions due to geopolitical conflicts and climate-related challenges. India’s strong reserve position provides a cushion against such uncertainties and helps stabilise domestic prices.

The government has reiterated its commitment to intervene in the market if required, through policy measures such as stock releases, import adjustments, or price controls, to ensure food security and price stability for consumers.

With sufficient reserves, diversified import sources, and improved domestic output, India appears well-positioned to manage both routine demand and potential supply shocks in the coming months.

If sugarcane could speak, Maharashtra’s farms would sound anxious — worried about unpredictable rain, soil salinity, and the chemical exhaustion...

If sugarcane could speak, Maharashtra’s farms would sound anxious — worried about unpredictable rain, soil salinity, and the chemical exhaustion that builds up over years. Farmers, though experienced, often detect these stresses too late — when pests infest fields and yields decline. But what if technology could allow sugarcane to “speak” — to warn farmers before it’s too late?

That vision lies at the heart of a new approach that blends Artificial Intelligence (AI), nanobiotechnology, and farmers’ traditional wisdom to create “talking fields.” Maharashtra’s MahaAgriTech initiative has already integrated AI and satellite imagery into farming; the next step is to go beyond merely seeing crops from above — to actually “listen” to them at the molecular level and respond intelligently.

Imagine a farmer in Solapur waving a sugarcane leaf in front of his phone. Within seconds, an AI model detects subtle discoloration invisible to the naked eye, confirms early drought stress using soil sensors and satellite imagery, and sends a message:

Mild water stress detected. Apply 10% less nitrogen and use nano-bio foliar spray.”

What once sounded like science fiction is now becoming real — as AI and nanotechnology converge to create precision-based, eco-friendly agriculture systems.

AI trained on real-time images and farm data can forecast water shortages, pest outbreaks, or nutrient imbalances days before symptoms appear. Yet, data alone doesn’t heal crops — that’s where nanobiotechnology steps in. Biogenic nanoparticles derived from microbes or plants can deliver nutrients directly, boost plant immunity, and suppress pathogens without toxicity. Together, these create a closed feedback loop: the plant emits distress signals, AI diagnoses the issue, and nanotech delivers the cure.

This can work through a tiered ecosystem. On the ground, farmers use affordable sensors and mobile apps connected to the MahaAgriTech cloud. In laboratories, researchers develop nano-bio products targeting specific stresses. Local Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and cooperatives then train farmers to apply these AI-driven solutions. The system ensures scientific precision while keeping rural usability simple.

The potential impact is massive. Early stress detection and nano-bio interventions can increase water-use efficiency by 30%, reduce fertilizer and pesticide use by 40%, and enhance sugar yield and recovery by 15–20%. Lower input costs, better soil health, and greener productivity could redefine Maharashtra’s sugarcane economy — making it more resilient to erratic monsoons and inflationary pressures.

However, challenges persist. Digital literacy among small farmers is limited, IoT devices are costly, and data privacy concerns remain. Solutions could include open-source AI tools in Marathi, public-private partnerships to subsidize sensors, and district-level digital training programs. Modular AI-nano systems would allow gradual adoption tailored to each region’s readiness.

Yet, technology must serve farmers — not intimidate them. In rural Maharashtra, where agriculture is a tradition as much as a livelihood, digital tools must be intuitive. The goal isn’t to replace a farmer’s instinct but to enhance it. An icon- and voice-enabled Marathi app could make even complex AI systems accessible to every farmer.

Beyond practicality, there’s a poetic truth here. Plants constantly “speak” through chemical cues and subtle leaf-reflectance changes long before visible symptoms appear. AI merely translates these hidden messages; nanobiotech responds with targeted care. The result is a true dialogue between the farmer and the crop — with science acting as nature’s interpreter.

If successful, this model could extend to cotton, soybean, and rice, helping India reduce chemical dependency, improve soil fertility, and build climate resilience. It redefines agricultural intelligence — not as data in machines, but as shared wisdom between nature and innovation.

In pushing Maharashtra toward AI-driven agriculture, integrating nanobiology introduces the vital element of adaptability. It envisions a future where crops don’t just grow — they converse. Where technology anticipates problems, delivers precise solutions, and maintains ecological balance.

Perhaps the real future of farming isn’t about teaching farmers to program machines —
but teaching machines to care.

This article is authored by Sanyukta Salve, Dr. Rajendra Patil, and Anaya Phatak are biotechnology researchers and innovators from Savitribai Phule Pune University, focusing on AI, nanobiotech, and sustainable agriculture.
India’s agricultural sector continues to demonstrate resilience as the total area sown under Rabi crops exceeded 640 lakh hectares this...

India’s agricultural sector continues to demonstrate resilience as the total area sown under Rabi crops exceeded 640 lakh hectares this season, slightly higher than the 637.49 lakh hectares recorded during the corresponding period last year. The growth in wheat and pulses sowing has significantly contributed to this progress, showcasing the efforts of Indian farmers and government initiatives aimed at enhancing crop coverage.

Detailed Highlights:

1. Total Rabi Crop Coverage

Total Area Sown: 640 lakh hectares (compared to 637.49 lakh hectares in 2023-24).

2. Key Crops Performance

Wheat:

Coverage increased to 320 lakh hectares from 315.63 lakh hectares last year.

Surpassed the normal area (312.35 lakh hectares) based on the last five years’ average.

Pulses:

Expanded to 141.69 lakh hectares, up from 139.29 lakh hectares in 2023-24.

Breakdown:

Gram: 98.28 lakh hectares (up from 95.87 lakh hectares).

Lentil: 17.43 lakh hectares (slightly lower than 17.76 lakh hectares).

Fieldpea: 8.94 lakh hectares (compared to 8.98 lakh hectares last year).

Urdbean: 5.12 lakh hectares (same as last year).

Moongbean: 1.21 lakh hectares (compared to 1.08 lakh hectares).

Shri Anna & Coarse Cereals:

Covered 54.49 lakh hectares, marginally lower than 54.63 lakh hectares last year.

Specific performance:

Maize: 22.90 lakh hectares, up from 21.32 lakh hectares.

Jowar: 23.95 lakh hectares, down from 25.76 lakh hectares.

Barley: 6.62 lakh hectares, slightly lower than 6.71 lakh hectares.

Oilseeds:

Declined to 97.62 lakh hectares from 101.80 lakh hectares last year.

Rapeseed and Mustard: 89.30 lakh hectares (down from 93.73 lakh hectares).

Significance:

Wheat and Pulses Growth:

Increased wheat sowing reflects robust productivity expectations, ensuring adequate food grain supply for the country.

Higher pulses coverage aligns with government efforts to boost domestic production and reduce dependency on imports.

Challenges in Oilseeds and Coarse Cereals:

The decline in oilseed acreage emphasizes the need for enhanced government incentives to promote cultivation.

Shri Anna & Coarse cereals require targeted initiatives to sustain farmer interest in these crucial crops.

Government Support:

The increase in Rabi sowing reflects the success of various government schemes like PM-Kisan and targeted MSP hikes, ensuring timely assistance for farmers.

Foreseeing everything that might happen to agricultural equipment during transportation is difficult. Unpredictable events such as traffic accidents, bad weather,...

Foreseeing everything that might happen to agricultural equipment during transportation is difficult. Unpredictable events such as traffic accidents, bad weather, breakdowns, or even theft can turn shipping into a nightmare and lead to financial setbacks. Obtaining insurance is always important to reduce the risks of financial losses and ensure safety.

What Is Shipping Insurance?

It provides coverage for goods that are lost, damaged, or stolen. With this policy, you are compensated for loss or damage up to the insured value of the goods and shipping costs. You can customize your policy based on what you ship, how you ship, and the freight forwarders you cooperate with. Insurance can also include coverage for high-value or time-sensitive cargo.

Is It a Legal Requirement To Obtain an Insurance?

Insuring agricultural equipment for transportation is not legally required. However, when you transport cargo, there are always some risks. An accident could lead to partial or total loss, depending on the damage.

In addition to obtaining policy, it is essential to partner with a reliable shipping company to safeguard your agricultural equipment during transportation.

How To Choose a Reliable Logistics Provider?

Before looking for a provider, decide if you need insurance and what it should cover. It is most convenient when the policy is included in the provider’s services — this will save you time searching for an insurance company. Additionally, be cautious of companies that offer limited coverage for your equipment.

Atlantic Project Cargo — expert in machinery transport, especially in tractor shipping. Our freight forwarding company offers various logistic services, e.g. ocean and air cargo transportation as well as providing insurance. We prioritize your choices and are committed to going the extra mile to protect your equipment during transportation.

Common Risks In Agricultural Equipment Shipping

Here is the list of what may happen to your farming machinery during transportation:

Traffic accidents;

Theft or loss;

Fire;

Mechanical damages during transportation;

Delayed shipping;

Natural disasters.

Advantages of Using Insurance

It is up to you wether you need insurance or not. However, there are several reasons why you should obtain it.

No loss of revenue

Knowing you will be refunded a certain amount of the value of lost goods is reassuring. This allows you to quickly resend items if something goes wrong.

Confidence and peace

Delays and damages can hurt loyalty and reduce repeat business. Insurance protects your bottom line and helps maintain your reputation.

Small fee saves you money

For a relatively small fee, the owner will be spared potential losses, no matter what they are caused by. When transporting large freights, the loss of them can bring enormous waste that will not pay off for a long time. Is it worth the risk?

Now you know why using insurance is important when transporting your farm equipment. The policy guarantees you all the necessary payments in case of accidents. Сooperate with only reliable logistic providers, like Atlantic Project Cargo, and your agricultural machinery will reach its final destination safely.

It is wise to insure your farm equipment to avoid the stress of such losses.

In the Union Budget 2024-25, the government has placed a strong emphasis on enhancing agricultural productivity. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a significant increase in the allocation for agriculture and allied activities, raising it to ₹1.52 lakh crore from ₹1.40 lakh crore in the previous year.

The budget outlines plans to introduce one crore farmers to natural farming methods over the next two years. A key goal is achieving self-sufficiency in pulses and oilseeds, with a strategy focused on increasing domestic production of crops such as mustard, groundnut, sesame, and soybean.

Sitharaman also highlighted the commitment to releasing 109 new high-yielding and climate-resilient varieties of 32 different field and horticulture crops. This research aims to improve productivity and develop crops that can withstand changing climate conditions.

In addition to these measures, the government will work with states to implement Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in agriculture. This initiative will help digitize farmer and land records across 400 districts, covering details for six crore farmers. A digital crop survey for Kharif crops will be conducted as part of this effort.

To further support farmers, the budget includes plans to issue Jan Samarth-based Kisan Credit Cards in five states, making it easier for farmers to access credit.

Farmers must navigate a complex landscape of challenges to meet the changing needs of our planet and the expectations of regulators, consumers, food processors, and retailers. They are confronted with increasing pressures from various quarters, each posing its own set of hurdles. Let us take a look at the major challenges faced by the agricultural sector.

Climate change

Climate change is no longer a distant concern; its impacts are reverberating across the globe, with agriculture bearing the brunt. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events are disrupting food production, jeopardizing food security, and pushing millions towards hunger.

Rising temperatures can shorten growing seasons, stress crops, and increase water demand, while heatwaves can devastate crops and extreme cold snaps can damage sensitive plants. Changes in precipitation patterns can lead to droughts in some regions and floods in others, both of which can damage crops, reduce yields, and contaminate water sources. More frequent and intense storms, hurricanes, and floods can cause widespread destruction to infrastructure, crops, and livestock.

Changing weather patterns, extreme weather events, and droughts triggered by climate change are among the primary drivers of food insecurity worldwide. These phenomena have a profound impact on food production, as they significantly limit the quality, availability, and accessibility of resources, ultimately compromising the stability of food systems globally.

Agriculture is tied to climate and weather conditions. Prolonged droughts or excessive rainfall can have devastating consequences on soil health and fertility. Drought conditions can deplete soil moisture, leading to crop failure and reduced yields, while excessive rainfall can cause waterlogging, soil erosion, and nutrient depletion.

Insufficient agricultural land

Of the 1.38 billion hectares of arable land available worldwide, more than one-third has been irreversibly compromised since 1961 due to extensive land conversion and traditional agricultural practices such as monocropping, intensive tilling, and unsustainable land use. These practices have led to soil erosion, desertification, and salinization, severely degrading the quality of arable land.

In 2011, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported a staggering decline of 54 million hectares of arable land across developed countries in North America, Europe, and South Asia. Meanwhile, some countries in East and North Africa, as well as South Asia, have already reached their limit of farmable land, leaving no room for expansion.

Alarmingly, only 12% of the global land surface is currently used for crop production, and it is unlikely that this number will increase significantly, primarily due to urbanization and the conversion of land for non-agricultural purposes. Consequently, the pressure remains to preserve and sustainably manage the existing arable land, even though most of it has already been degraded to some degree.

Soaring input costs

Agriculture faces a mounting challenge – skyrocketing input costs. From fertilizer and fuel to seeds and machinery, the price of essential resources is soaring, putting immense pressure on farmers and threatening food security worldwide.

Fertilizer expenses have surged twofold or even tripled in recent years, driven by a combination of factors such as disruptions in the supply chain, escalating energy prices, and the conflict in Ukraine. Diesel, essential for powering farm equipment, has witnessed substantial price hikes due to fluctuations in the global market and geopolitical tensions. Furthermore, the cost of seeds and agricultural machinery has risen due to heightened production and transportation expenses. Wages for agricultural labourers are also climbing, propelled by inflation and heightened competition for skilled workers.

Population growth

In 2022, the world population reached a staggering 8 billion, and if growth continues at the same rate, it will double in the next 50 years. This unprecedented growth can be attributed to high fertility levels and drastic increases in human lifespans, largely due to remarkable advancements in public health, medicine, nutrition, and personal hygiene, which have significantly accelerated population growth over the last century.

One obvious consequence of this population explosion is a higher demand for food. However, if agriculture cannot keep pace, more people will inevitably face hunger. Current figures are already alarming – in 2021, a staggering 828 million people suffered from hunger, an increase of 46 million compared to the previous year.

The agricultural sector must undergo serious transformations to prevent a catastrophic situation, as the already scarce arable land, combined with the impacts of climate change on food resources, poses a severe challenge in providing sufficient nutritious food for the growing population.

Loss of biodiversity

There would be no healthy ecosystems to provide the food we eat or the air we breathe without a wide range of animals, plants, and microorganisms. Soil, in particular, is one of the main global reservoirs of biological diversity – 25% of animal species on Earth live underground, and 40% of organisms in terrestrial ecosystems are in direct contact with soil at some point during their existence.

However, the extensive loss of biodiversity in agriculture is a prime example of what biologists call genetic erosion. This process results in the loss of entire species. For instance, in ancient North America, when corn (a species native to Central America) was introduced, it began replacing several domesticated plants, leading to their extinction.

Genetic erosion can also occur within species. For example, in India, out of the 400,000 varieties of rice that existed originally, only about 30,000 remain today. This erosion of genetic diversity has accelerated over time, particularly due to the rise of hybridized seeds and genetic modification in the 20th century.

Addressing these complex challenges requires a comprehensive and collaborative approach involving governments, policymakers, scientists, farmers, and the global community. Investing in sustainable agriculture practices, climate-resilient crop varieties, and innovative technologies will be crucial.

Sustainable agriculture is a farming method that prioritizes the long-term production of food and livestock while mitigating negative effects on the environment. Let us look at some of the best sustainable agricultural practices.

Sustainable agriculture is a farming method that prioritizes the long-term production of food and livestock while mitigating negative effects on the environment. It involves engaging in farming practices that promote environmental stewardship, economic profitability, and social responsibility. Let us look at some of the best sustainable agricultural practices.

Permaculture

Permaculture is a design system that utilizes natural principles to create sustainable human settlements, allowing people to live in harmony with the natural world. Permaculture principles and values can be applied to various areas of living, including energy systems, housing, local economies, water management, and food production.

Biodynamic Farming

Biodynamic farming involves ecological and holistic growing practices based on the philosophy of “anthroposophy.” Farmers are encouraged to view their farm as a living organism where cultivated species are interconnected and support the overall health of the system. One of the principles of biodynamic farming is diverse crop rotation, which is the practice of planting different crops on a particular plot of land in different seasons.

Hydroponics and Aquaponics

These innovative agricultural methods involve growing plants without soil and nourishing them through specific nutrients added to water. Crops are produced with their roots directly in a mineral solution or with their roots in an inert medium like gravel or perlite in hydroponic systems. The aquaponics and hydroponics systems and equipment market is anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately +9.0%, resulting in a market size of around USD 2141.7 million by 2028. Aquaponics combines the rearing of aquatic animals, such as fish, with the growing of hydroponic crops.

Urban Agriculture

Localizing our food system is crucial to “grow” food much closer to home, including in cities. Since most of the world’s population is projected to live in urban areas in the future, there is an immense opportunity for urban agriculture to make a remarkable positive impact on how we produce our food globally.

Agroforestry and Food Forests

Agroforestry involves the cultivation of trees and shrubs among crops or on the land. Agroforestry systems can integrate both agricultural and forestry practices for sustainable, productive, and diverse land use. Trees create a beneficial microclimate in agroforestry systems that maintain favourable temperatures and soil moisture while protecting crops from wind or heavy rain.

Polycultures and Crop Rotation

Polyculture farming includes the cultivation of multiple crop species within a single area. These species are often complementary to each other and aimed at producing a greater variety of products from one plot while fully utilizing available resources. High biodiversity makes the system resilient to weather fluctuations, promotes a balanced diet, and employs natural processes to maintain soil fertility. Crop rotation is based on growing a sequence of different types of plants in the same area in successive seasons.

Cultivation of Heirloom and Heritage Varieties

As a result of the industrialization of the global food system, only a limited number of varieties of our food plants are cultivated commercially. This situation is driven by the need to meet market demand for produce that can withstand long-distance transportation and extended storage periods. This reduced genetic diversity in our food crop species diminishes their ability to adapt or adjust to changes in climate, diseases, and environmental stresses.

Humane Animal Husbandry

Sustainable animal farming is achievable and beneficial for the environment, our nutritional needs, and the animals themselves. Animals raised on pasture or in their natural environments live under less stress, closer to their natural way of living. They can engage in social interactions with other animals and exhibit behaviours that are natural to them.

Natural Pest Management

One of the primary goals of sustainable agricultural techniques is to avoid using synthetic pesticides and other chemicals that suppress pest infestations and pathogens. Infusing the soil with large amounts of chemicals to grow crops does not provide a long-term solution and can affect consumer health. Therefore, farmers who practice sustainable farming seek natural solutions to create conditions that do not promote pest growth.

Mulching and Manual Weed Control

The growth of weeds and other unwanted plants around crops can be drastically reduced by covering the soil around those plants using ground covers and mulching. This practice also helps in retaining moisture in the soil around the plants. This technique is primarily applied in strawberry farming, where the plants are spaced apart, leading to weeds growing in the spaces between them.

Organic mulch materials like grass clippings, straws, or wood chips improve nutrient retention in the soil and allow the organic soil microorganisms to increase soil fertility and quality.

At stake is a multi-billion dollar export market and the very identity of this rice strain. As the tensions escalate, both nations are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to secure the GI tag, which would grant them exclusive rights to market their Basmati rice in the lucrative European Union (EU) market.

Deep in the heart of the Indo-Gangetic plains, a centuries-old battle is raging over one of the world’s most prized rice varieties – the aromatic and delectable Basmati. This time, however, the battleground has shifted from the lush paddy fields to the corridors of power in Brussels, as India and Pakistan vie for the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the European Commission (EC) for their respective Basmati rice varieties.

At stake is a multi-billion dollar export market and the very identity of this rice strain. As the tensions escalate, both nations are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to secure the GI tag, which would grant them exclusive rights to market their Basmati rice in the lucrative European Union (EU) market.

The Roots of the Conflict

The conflict over Basmati rice has its roots in the shared history and geography of the two nations. Basmati, derived from the Sanskrit word “vasmati” meaning “fragrant,” has been cultivated in the fertile plains of the Indian subcontinent for centuries. Both India and Pakistan lay claim to their origins, with each nation boasting its unique varieties and cultivation techniques.

India, with its vast swaths of Basmati-growing regions spanning states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, and western Uttar Pradesh, submitted its GI registration application to the EC on July 20, 2018. Pakistan, on the other hand, followed suit on August 24, 2023, seeking to broaden the geographical scope of its Basmati GI from 14 to 48 districts.

The Strategic Offensive

Recognizing the high stakes involved, the Indian government has launched a strategic offensive to counter Pakistan’s ambitious bid. The Union Commerce Ministry, in consultation with key stakeholders like the Basmati Export Development Foundation, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), and associations of rice exporters, is finalizing a comprehensive report to refute Pakistan’s claims.

“In a meeting convened by Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal in the first week of April, all stakeholders were directed to defend the case against Pakistan in a manner that sets a precedent for similar situations,” revealed a high-ranking official privy to the discussions.

India’s response, expected to be submitted to the EC by the fourth week of May, will challenge Pakistan’s sudden expansion of Basmati-growing districts without a solid scientific basis. According to Vijay Setia, former president of the All India Rice Exporters Association, “Pakistan’s case lacks a solid foundation and is unlikely to be upheld in the EC. Pakistan had initially identified 14 districts as Basmati rice-producing districts, but suddenly increased this number to 48 without providing any scientific base.”

The Basmati Bounty

The stakes are high for both nations, as Basmati rice exports represent a significant slice of their agricultural trade. In the fiscal year 2022-23, India’s Basmati trade soared to a staggering $4.8 billion, with volumes reaching 4.6 million metric tons, cementing its position as the world’s top exporter of this premium variety.

Moreover, India’s Basmati exports to the EU have consistently risen over the past three years, reaching 152,857 metric tons valued at $167 million in the fiscal year 2023. Between April 2023 and January 2024 alone, India exported 130,122 metric tons of Basmati worth $168 million to the EU, a testament to the robust demand and superior quality of Indian Basmati in European markets.

Pakistan’s Perspective

While Pakistan’s case has drawn criticism from Indian quarters, Islamabad remains undeterred. Hamid Malik, a Lahore-based rice commodity specialist and founding partner of the Agri Policy Research Institute, Islamabad, argues that Pakistan has historically supported India’s fight for GI protection for Basmati, paving the way for the recognition of PUSA 1 as a Basmati variety.

“Pakistan will defend its case, including the 48 Basmati-growing districts, citing a verdict of the Delhi High Court pronounced on April 25, 2019, regarding the restriction of Basmati cultivation in the Indo-Gangetic Plains,” Malik said.

The European Commission’s Balancing Act

Caught in the crossfire of this high-stakes battle, the European Commission finds itself in a delicate position. An EC official acknowledged that both India and Pakistan are seeking European GI protection for Basmati rice, and the commission will strive for a “balanced solution” that represents a win for all parties while complying with existing rules.

“If either party opposes, the EU will ensure it is examined in line with standing procedures, and ensure the rights of all parties,” the official stated, underscoring the commission’s commitment to fairness and due process.

As the Rice Wars rage on, the world watches with bated breath, eager to see which nation will emerge victorious in this centuries-old battle for the crown jewel of rice varieties. Whichever way the verdict swings, one thing is certain: the rich legacy and cherished flavour of Basmati rice will continue to captivate palates across the globe, a testament to the enduring culinary heritage of the Indian subcontinent.

Amidst demonstrations by farmers, Congress escalates its attack on the administration, calling for a special session of Parliament to discuss issues related to agriculture. The Punjab State Assembly supports the idea of involving the local community in solving problems.

With the farmers’ protest, the Congress party has escalated its attack on the government in a fierce battle with the BJP-led Centre. The opposition has demanded that Parliament hold a special session to address the concerns of the protesting farmers, demanding that the urgent challenges facing the agricultural community be given quick consideration.

The Congress party, which is well-known for taking a strong stand on matters affecting farmers, has also pushed the Punjab government to do the same by calling a special session of the state legislature. This action is meant to give farmers a forum for in-depth conversations about the problems they encounter, with an emphasis on coming up with workable solutions.

Following a terrible event at Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana border on Wednesday, where a farmer lost his life and about 12 policemen were injured in confrontations, there has been a need for immediate action. A group of farmers demonstrating started the altercation as they tried to go closer to the barricades that had been erected in the area.

The episode has intensified the discussion surrounding the farmers’ protest, emphasising the necessity of working together to resolve the issues and find a solution that pleases all parties. The Congress party argues that to give the farmers a forum for a thorough discussion of their problems and to make sure their opinions are heard, a special session of Parliament is necessary.

The Punjab State Assembly’s call for a similar meeting highlights how important regional involvement is in resolving issues unique to the state’s farming community. The opposition party thinks that to create successful policies that address the difficulties encountered by farmers and advance their welfare, a multi-level strategy including both the federal and state governments is necessary.

Due to ongoing farmer protests that are causing jams at important borders, Delhi Police have issued traffic advisories. In light of the unstable circumstances, commuters are asked to plan their routes, anticipate delays, and cooperate.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis unexpectedly brought up the ongoing farmers’ protest at the Punjab-Haryana borders during his speech at the “India-Greece Business Forum” on Thursday. One of the many similarities between Greece and India, the Greek politician said, is the agitation of the farmers.

During his discussion of the different areas in which the two countries are comparable, Mitsotakis said, “We share one more thing. Farmers in Greece and India are demonstrating.” This allusion to the farmers’ demonstrations garnered notice and highlighted how global agricultural issues are.

Although the common worry was acknowledged, Mitsotakis did not waste time drawing attention to the bigger picture and stressing the significance of addressing farming’s future. He discussed his opinions and said he was very interested in the need for major productivity increases in the global economy.

The statements made by the Prime Minister of Greece at the India-Greece Business Forum highlight how intertwined world concerns are and how important international cooperation is in addressing shared problems. A common concern for the agriculture industry and farmers’ well-being may be seen in the recognition of farmers’ protests in both nations.

With the ongoing conversations about strengthening economic relations and collaboration between Greece and India, Mitsotakis’s allusion to the protests by farmers serves as a reminder of the various obstacles that countries worldwide confront. With its crucial role in maintaining food security and sustainability, the agriculture sector continues to be of great importance to leaders trying to make their way through the complexity of a world that is changing quickly.

Leaders from both countries can examine prospects for cooperation in a range of industries, including agriculture, at the India-Greece Business Forum. Finding common ground on matters such as farmer protests creates opportunities for communication and collaboration outside of the conventional commercial sphere, resulting in a greater understanding between Greece and India.

Due to continued farmer demonstrations producing blockages at city borders, Delhi Police have issued a traffic advisory. As security measures affect many areas, commuters are advised to prepare alternate routes and anticipate delays.

A traffic advisory alerting commuters to potential disruptions at the city’s borders has been released by the Delhi Police. The notice, sent on Thursday, states that pickets and roadblocks erected by farmers in protest are likely to impede vehicular traffic.

Thousands of farmers are still tented at key areas like the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana and Khanauri, continuing their march towards the nation’s capital. The farmers are pushing for several things, such as the cancellation of agricultural debt and a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

Several important locations, such as the Jheel Khurd Border, Mandi Border, Aaya Nagar Border, DND Flyway, Kalindi Kunj, Badarpur, Palla, Surajkund, and Karni Singh shooting range, are listed as experiencing interruptions in the traffic alert. To minimise inconvenience, commuters are advised to plan their journeys appropriately.

The Delhi Police are taking preventative measures to uphold law and order in the wake of the current protest by setting up pickets and checkpoints. Traffic delays are likely to result from these security measures, especially in the aforementioned regions. The advice gives commuters and locals a vital heads-up by encouraging them to think about alternate routes and adjust their travel plans appropriately.

Protesters have been forcefully pushing for their demands during the protracted and controversial farmers’ demonstration. The state of affairs is still fluid, and government actions are being taken to guarantee the protection and safety of every citizen while permitting nonviolent protests.

The Delhi Police is appealing for understanding during this difficult time and stressing the need for public cooperation as the farmers and the government continue their standoff. The public will be given regular updates and up-to-date information to help them plan their travels effectively and negotiate the changing circumstances.

At a Rojgar Mela in Diyankel, Union Minister Arjun Munda reaffirms the government's dedication to the welfare of farmers by declaring a reasonable price of ₹340 per quintal for sugarcane.

On Thursday, Union Minister Arjun Munda graced the Rojgar Mela in Diyankel, where he reaffirmed the Central Government’s steadfast commitment to the well-being of farmers. With an emphasis on the ongoing efforts, the minister emphasised the government’s commitment to finding peaceful solutions to agricultural problems.

In his speech, Arjun Munda said, “The welfare of the farmers is a top priority for the Government of India. The reasonable and compensatory price of sugarcane was set at ₹340 per quintal just yesterday, marking a considerable change in the market. Working diligently under PM Modi’s leadership, we are committed to the farmers.”

The Union Minister’s presence at the Rojgar Mela highlights the government’s emphasis on regional economic growth and job prospects. Job seekers were able to network with prospective companies and investigate other career paths throughout the event.

Munda’s pledge regarding the government’s dedication to farmer welfare coincides with continuing conversations and exchanges meant to tackle the issues brought forward by the farming community. Establishing a just and equitable price for sugarcane is regarded as a concrete measure to guarantee equitable recompense for the toil and commitment of farmers.

The government’s response to the demands of the agriculture sector is evident in the decision to set the price of sugarcane at ₹340 per quintal. It is anticipated to have a favourable effect on farmers by giving them a just price for their produce and enhancing the general welfare of the farming community.

The remarks made by the Union Minister also provided insight into the cooperative initiatives that are being carried out under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government’s proactive approach to problem-solving through discussion is viewed as a positive strategy that creates an atmosphere that is favourable to the discovery of all-encompassing and long-lasting solutions.

Chief Minister Bhagwat Mann's Punjab government shows compassion and dedication to upholding the sacrifices made by the farmers' movement by offering Shubhkaran Singh's family ₹1 crore and a government position.

By offering ₹1 crore in financial support and a government position to the family of Shubhkaran Singh, who lost his life during the farmers’ movement on the Khanuri border, the Punjab government has shown compassion.

Devoted farmer Shubhkaran Singh passed away from injuries he received during the protests, making him a symbol of the current agricultural protests. The Punjab administration, led by the Chief Minister, Bhagwat Mann, has shown that his sacrifice has not gone unappreciated by providing the bereaved family with prompt support.

At a news conference, Bhagwat Mann made the statement and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the families of those who have given their all for the farmers’ movement. The goal of the ₹1 crore financial aid is to give Shubhkaran Singh’s family a significant amount of support during this trying period.

In addition, the government has offered Shubhkaran Singh’s younger sister a government position as a helping hand. Taking into account the difficulties the family may encounter in the wake of a loved one’s passing, this policy attempts to guarantee a stable and secure future for them.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holding those accountable for Shubhkaran Singh’s tragic death accountable. The state will demonstrate its commitment to maintaining the rule of law and guaranteeing accountability for any misconduct by taking legal action against the offenders.

Many parties, including activist groups and farmer unions, have hailed the decision greatly, viewing it as a step in the right direction towards acknowledging the sacrifices made by people like Shubhkaran Singh in the fight for their rights and the well-being of the farming community.

As part of a larger initiative to address the issues facing farmers and their families, the government has offered compensation and a job, emphasising its commitment to creating a supportive environment for those actively involved in the ongoing farmers’ movement.

The farmer movement's leader, Sarwan Singh Pandher, expresses shock at the Punjab government's lack of response to Shubhkaran Singh's situation, casting doubt on their dedication to farmers' worries and pledges.

Leader of the farmer movement Sarwan Singh Pandher has expressed grave concern and disapproval of the Punjab government’s seeming unwillingness to keep its word amid continuing discussions with farmers. The matter under discussion concerns the consequences of Shubhkaran Singh’s untimely demise. Pandher contends that although the government has acknowledged the requests, it has not moved swiftly enough.

Following an attack, farmer Shubhkaran Singh passed away from injuries sustained. The farmer leaders filed a case under Section 302 (murder) against the attackers in an attempt to bring them to justice. Singh’s body was left at the hospital for more than 14 hours, according to Pandher, who claims that although the Punjab Government had initially granted this request, they have subsequently postponed acting on it.

Speaking on the subject, Sarwan Singh Pandher said, “All of our demands were met, including registering a case under Section 302, giving Shubhkaran Singh the title of ‘martyr,’ talking with his family about compensation, and setting up a board for a postmortem using videography. However, the Punjab government’s protracted silence is disrespectful to our fellow farmer’s martyrdom.”

Pandher questioned whether the incident happened in Punjab or Haryana and voiced his displeasure with the government’s intent on looking into the incident’s location. Pandher claims that this delay is keeping them from carrying out Shubhkaran Singh’s final rituals. The leader of the farmers deemed this state of affairs “condemnable” and denounced the administration for undermining the sacrifices that farmers had made.

“The Punjab Government has not responded for almost 14 hours at this point. As of now, I don’t think we will be able to carry out Shubhkaran Singh’s final rituals. The discussions with the government of Punjab are still ongoing,” Pandher continued.

Concerns regarding the government’s commitment to keeping its word made during talks with farmer representatives have been raised by the incident. The family of Shubhkaran Singh is even more devastated by the delay in action, and it also calls into doubt the government’s sincerity in responding to the concerns of the farming community.

Sarwan Singh Pandher, the general secretary of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, questions the Punjab government's commitment to justice by criticising them for their delay in filing a formal complaint following the death of a young farmer.

Sarwan Singh Pandher, the General Secretary of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, has delivered a scathing critique of the Punjab government. He claims that the authorities failed to fulfil their obligation to file a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the death of a young farmer at the Khanauri Border during the ongoing protests.

Pandher said that he was extremely dissatisfied with the way the administration was handling the matter and that it was “insulting the martyrdom of our martyrs.” To provide justice to the departed farmer and his family, the farmer leader stressed the importance of acting quickly and decisively.

One of the main issues brought up by Pandher is the seeming hold-up in filing the FIR despite the demands made during the most recent discussions being accepted. The farmer leader expressed worries about the government’s sincerity in resolving the issues of the farming community, pointing out that the delay casts doubt on their commitment to providing justice.

The tragic incident involving the farmer who passed away occurred close to the Khanauri Border, the site of ongoing protests. Pandher highlighted the significance of filing a formal complaint as soon as possible to initiate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the youth’s death. He reminded everyone that justice is denied if delayed and urged the administration to act accordingly.

The Punjab government has been encouraged to prioritise the interests and well-being of the farmers who have been leading the protests by the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee General Secretary. To make sure that those in charge of the young farmer’s death are held accountable, he demanded accountability and openness from the inquiry process.

Pandher further emphasised that all demands were fulfilled during the negotiations, which adds to the ambiguity surrounding the cause for the delay in filing the FIR. Worried residents and the farming community have voiced concerns about the administration’s inconsistent response.

This initiative encompasses 11 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) spanning 11 states, aiming to establish a seamless integration of PACS godowns with the food grain supply chain.

On February 24th, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for several initiatives aimed at revitalizing the cooperative sector in India. The event, scheduled to commence at 10:30 AM at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, marks a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to bolstering agricultural infrastructure and empowering small and marginal farmers across the country.

One of the key highlights of the event is the inauguration of the pilot project for the ‘World’s Largest Grain Storage Plan in Cooperative Sector.’ This initiative encompasses 11 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) spanning 11 states, aiming to establish a seamless integration of PACS godowns with the food grain supply chain. By fortifying food security and enhancing economic development, this project, supported by NABARD and spearheaded by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), underscores the government’s dedication to ensuring agricultural prosperity.

In addition, Prime Minister Modi will lay the foundation stone for an additional 500 PACS across the nation, earmarked for the construction of godowns and other agricultural infrastructure. This expansion initiative seeks to amplify the reach and impact of the cooperative sector, enabling more farmers to benefit from enhanced storage facilities and streamlined supply chain mechanisms. The convergence of various existing schemes, such as the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) and Agriculture Marketing Infrastructure (AMI), further underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive ecosystem for agricultural growth and development.

Furthermore, the inauguration of the project for computerization in 18,000 PACS nationwide heralds a new era of digital empowerment for the cooperative sector. Aligned with the government’s vision of “Sahakar se Samridhi,” this initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and governance by transitioning all functional PACS onto a unified Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) based national software. Developed by NABARD, the National Level Common Software promises to revolutionize the functioning of PACS, enabling seamless integration and connectivity with state and district-level cooperative banks.

With a financial outlay exceeding Rs 2,500 crore, these initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to revitalizing the cooperative sector and empowering farmers across the length and breadth of the nation. As Prime Minister Modi inaugurates and lays the foundation stone for these monumental projects, the cooperative sector embarks on a new trajectory of growth, resilience, and prosperity.

Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda emphasises the necessity of ongoing cooperation between the government and farmers, noting that discussions have made headway but stressing the need for ongoing efforts to settle disputes and put farmers' welfare first.

The Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane has increased significantly, as announced by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, in a major step that would support the agriculture industry and guarantee the welfare of farmers. During his speech to the nation on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the government’s steadfast commitment to implementing measures that advance the welfare of farmers across.

It is anticipated that the decision to increase sugarcane’s FRP will have a significant effect on the agricultural environment, especially for the many farmers who cultivate sugarcane. The action is a response to the government’s commitment to attending to the issues and demands of the farming sector.

An important part of India’s agricultural economy is sugarcane, and the government’s understanding of the difficulties experienced by sugarcane producers is reflected in the higher FRP. The announcement is expected to infuse the farming community with hope and give them the help they need to increase productivity and improve their socioeconomic circumstances in general.

The statement made by the Prime Minister highlights the administration’s proactive approach to improving the agricultural industry. In addition to honouring farmers for their dedication, the historic rise in sugarcane prices is a step in the direction of securing their financial security and prosperity.

The nation’s backbone, the farmers, have been facing several difficulties, such as volatile commodity prices and unpredictable economic times. The government’s move to increase sugarcane’s FRP demonstrates its resolve to deal with these issues and promote long-term, sustainable growth in the agriculture industry.

Millions of farmers nationwide should see an improvement in their quality of life as a result of the updated sugarcane pricing, which will give them a just reward for their harvest. The rise in sugarcane prices is a significant step towards guaranteeing the prosperity of those who work persistently to feed the country, even as the government continues to enact policies targeted at empowering farmers.

Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda stressed the importance of further efforts from the government and farmers to reach an agreement on important issues in a statement released on Thursday. Munda stated that additional work is needed to address unresolved issues and come to a mutually agreeable conclusion despite multiple rounds of meetings.

The progress in the current negotiations with farmers has been satisfactory, according to Munda, who said, “Meaningful talks have been held in the several rounds of discussions with farmers.” He did, however, draw attention to the need for persistent efforts on all sides to find common ground on some divisive matters.

The federal government’s steadfast commitment to giving farmers’ welfare and interests top priority was emphasised by the minister of agriculture. Munda emphasised, “The Government of India is committed to working for the interest of farmers, and it is doing that,” restating the administration’s resolve to deal with the issues brought up by the farming community.

A focal point against the backdrop of recent agricultural changes has been the ongoing talks between the government and farmers. Although there has been some progress, there are still disagreements on several matters, which calls for more communication and cooperation.

The farming community can feel reassured by Munda’s statement, which highlights the government’s commitment to finding cooperative solutions that are advantageous to all parties involved. Both parties’ recognition of the need for more effort on both ends shows a dedication to candid dialogue and teamwork in resolving the issues facing the farm industry.

The 'Delhi Chalo' march was halted by farmer leaders following the death of a protestor at the Haryana border. Twelve police officers suffered injuries, three of them died, and tensions mounted.

The death of a protestor at the Haryana border forced the farmer leaders to call off the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased protester was killed on February 21 near the Khanauri border area after suffering a head injury during a confrontation between the demonstrators and security personnel.

The farmer leaders decided to examine the situation and decide on the next course of action, pausing the march at the Khanauri boundary. It is anticipated that they will declare their choice by Friday night.

Around 12 police officers were injured in the altercation between farmers on protest and the Haryana police, in addition to one protester losing their life. At the boundary between Data Singh and Khanauri, protestors encircled the police from all sides, setting a conflict. They added insult to injury by setting fire to stubble that contained chilli powder, making it difficult for the cops to breathe and see.

Three police personnel have died as a result of the ongoing farmers’ protest, Haryana police announced in a sombre update. Following the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, Haryana police sub-inspector Vijay Tohana was stationed at the Tohana border. On Wednesday, his health declined and he passed dead.

The event has caused the farmer leaders to reevaluate their plan due to concerns about the growing tensions between the protestors and police officials. The march has been momentarily halted due to the seriousness of the situation and the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances behind the death.

Citing the need to regulate information flow and uphold public order, Haryana extends the ban on mobile internet and bulk SMS in seven districts till February 23 amid a standoff between the government and farmers.

Amid a protracted standoff between the Haryana government and farmers, the former has chosen to extend the prohibition on mobile internet and bulk SMS services in seven districts through February 23. After the initial ban was scheduled to end on February 19, this extension has resulted in a challenging communication environment in the affected areas.

Bulk SMS and all dongle services offered on mobile networks are prohibited, as per an official statement from the Haryana government. Voice calls are not impacted by the restriction, however. Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad, and Sirsa are among the districts impacted by this instruction.

The government’s ongoing attempts to control the situation and uphold law and order amid the protests are demonstrated by the decision to extend the ban. The bulk SMS and mobile internet services have been suspended; this is perceived as a control mechanism over the communication and information flow within the designated districts.

Residents in the impacted areas have been debating and worrying about relocation as it will directly influence their capacity to do business, obtain information, and maintain relationships with friends and family. Businesses and people who depend on bulk SMS services for a variety of reasons suffer additional difficulties as a result of the restrictions on these services.

Tensions between the agricultural community and the government have escalated as a result of the farmer standoff, which has been going on for several months. The decision to prolong the ban on mobile internet usage indicates that strict action is being taken by the authorities to stop the dissemination of false information and to keep the peace in the community during this crucial time.

Critics contend that these communication limitations violate citizens’ fundamental rights, especially in a time when digital communication is essential to daily life. However, supporters of the government’s actions argue that these steps are required to stop the protests from getting worse and from becoming a threat to public safety.

MRK Panneerselvam, the Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare for Tamil Nadu introduced the agriculture budget for the fiscal year 2024–25 during a session at the Assembly on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards supporting sustainable agricultural practices and rural development.

In his speech to the Assembly, Minister Panneerselvam discussed the detrimental impacts of the region’s overuse of chemical pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers as well as the urgent need to improve soil fertility. He unveiled the “Chief Minister’s Mannuyir Kaathu Mannuyir Kaappom Scheme” (CM MK MKS), a comprehensive initiative with a Rs 206 crore budget for the fiscal year 2024–2025, to address this urgent issue. The flagship programme is made up of 22 parts that are designed to protect soil fertility and encourage chemical-free farming methods.

Reducing the use of artificial fertilisers in paddy production and empowering rural people to effectively tackle climate change are two of the key priorities mentioned in the budget speech. Plans were also revealed for the distribution of seeds to promote the growing of traditional paddy varieties, which are recognised for their potential health advantages, especially in the treatment of diabetes.

A significant amount of Rs 65.30 crore was set aside for the production of millet crops, primarily to increase yield and encourage farmers throughout the state to cultivate them. These programmes demonstrate Tamil Nadu’s government’s dedication to supporting sustainable farming methods and guaranteeing the welfare of farmers and rural communities.

The state budget for the fiscal year 2024–25 was unveiled by Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Monday, with a focus on women’s welfare and social justice. The budget announced many measures targeted at achieving the state’s developmental goals, with a focus on the realisation of the “seven grand Tamil dreams.”

The introduction of the “Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam” housing plan, which honours the late DMK leader and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, is a noteworthy aspect of the Budget. By 2030, this project seeks to build 8 lakh concrete homes in the state’s rural areas, primarily to replace hut huts with respectable housing for the occupants.

Farmer protestors supporting 'Delhi Chalo' were detained close to Delhi. They seek changes to the contentious farm regulations in their protest.

In an unexpected turn of events on Tuesday, hundreds of farmers who were trying to march towards Delhi in support of the ongoing ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation were arrested in the Gurugram neighbourhood of Manesar. The protesters, who belonged to groups like the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and the Dakshin Haryana Kisan Khap, had declared a nonviolent march in the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home.

The Dakshin Haryana Kisan Khap, SKM, and other farming organisations announced on Sunday that they would be holding a nonviolent march to raise awareness of the needs of the farming community. The farmers stated that should the police stop them, they would stage a peaceful sit-in, or dharna, in front of the Prime Minister’s house.

Farmers have been demanding the repeal of three contentious farm regulations passed by the government for months under the ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement. The policies have caused conflict and demonstrations as farmers claim they would negatively impact their livelihoods while providing big businesses with an unfair edge.

The farmers of Gurugram travelled to Delhi, holding banners and yelling slogans in support of their cause, hoping to be heard. However, the police stepped in to stop them when they got closer to the Manesar region. The protesters were detained by the authorities due to security concerns and the possibility of disturbance.

There was outrage when the farmers who had been arrested were placed under guard and brought to specific areas. Farmers’ supporters contend that allowing peaceful demonstrations is a fundamental democratic right and that the protestors’ incarceration violates the rights to free speech and assembly.

Supporters of the imprisoned farmers are calling for their release, and the situation in Gurugram is still tense. The organisations representing farmers have pledged to keep up the fight until their demands are fulfilled and the farm rules are overturned. The government, however, insists that the regulations are meant to provide farmers more options and to modernise agriculture.

A prominent figure in the farmers' protest, Sarwan Singh Pandher, calls on the central government to give in to long-standing demands, such as the cancellation of agricultural loans and a formal guarantee of minimum support prices (MSP) for crops. As government offers are rejected, talks heat up and protests in Delhi get more intense.

Leader Sarwan Singh Pandher has demanded that the Central government respond to the requests that the farmers have been making for a long time. The main demands, which have been at the centre of the farmers’ protest for a long time, are the remission of agricultural loans and a legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

The call for attention to their demands follows the rejection of the latest government offers by farmer leaders involved in the “Delhi Chalo” protest. The government’s offer to purchase cotton, maize, and pulses at MSP for government agencies for the following five years was one of the offers that was turned down. Representatives from the farming community contended that the proposed plan falls short of meeting the needs and interests of the farming community.

Prominent member of the farmers’ movement Sarwan Singh Pandher declared on Tuesday that the Centre needs to pay attention to their demands for a legal guarantee on the MSP, which guarantees farmers a fair price for their produce. Pandher further underlined the urgent need for the agricultural community to demand the forgiveness of farm loans.

Farmer leaders expressed their displeasure with the government’s proposal, saying that it failed to address the main issues brought up by the demonstrators. The denial highlights the ongoing misunderstanding that exists between the farmers and the administration, extending the standoff that has defined the protests.

Pandher declared that on Wednesday, farmers would be gathering in Delhi, a sign of the protests becoming more intense. This move is a calculated escalation meant to highlight their demands and increase the pressure on the government to hold substantive talks.

Several rounds of negotiations between the government and farmer representatives have taken place as a result of the long-running agitation by farmers. However, a settlement has proven elusive as both parties struggle to reach an agreement on matters that are essential to the welfare of the farming community.

BJP leader and former Chief Minister of Punjab, Amarinder Singh, spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently about issues in Punjab, especially those affecting farmers, amidst the continuing protests against MSP and agricultural laws.

The former Chief Minister of Punjab and leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Amarinder Singh, stated that he recently discussed several Punjab-related issues, particularly those affecting the farming sector, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In light of the farmers’ continued protests, this is an important development.

Farmers, who have been strongly against the new agricultural laws, recently rejected the Central government’s proposal regarding the procurement of pulses, maize, and cotton at Minimum Support Prices (MSP) by government agencies for five years. The rejection emphasises the long-standing concerns and dissatisfaction of the farming community with the current policy.

One of the main points of disagreement between the farmers and the government has been the desire for a legislative guarantee for the MSP regime, which is central to the farmers’ demands. Protesters continue to demonstrate emphasising how crucial it is to make MSP a legally protected right so that they can pursue their farming endeavours with confidence and security.

Strong will and tenacity have characterised the ongoing demonstrations, which have been led mostly by Punjabi farmers. The farmers have faced difficulties and poor weather, but they have not wavered in their resolve to voice their grievances and demand action from the government.

It is evident from the farmers’ rejection of the government’s proposal and their persistent calls for a legislative guarantee for MSP that the agricultural changes are complicated and that all parties involved must have a thorough discussion. A variety of Punjab-related subjects were probably covered in the discussion between Amarinder Singh and Prime Minister Modi, reflecting the state’s complex problems.

Given the upcoming general elections in the next couple of months, it's improbable that the ban will be lifted even after March 31. Sources indicate that rabi (winter) onion production is anticipated to be lower due to reduced area coverage, particularly in Maharashtra.

The Indian government has prolonged the prohibition on onion exports until the culmination of the fiscal year. This extension, announced by Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh to PTI on Tuesday, signifies the Centre’s resolve to maintain adequate supply levels and curb inflationary pressures in the market.

The recent move by the Centre echoes its stance from late 2023. On December 8, 2023, a notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade amended the export policy of onions from free to prohibited until March 31, 2024.

In October 2023, the Centre had opted to increase the sale of buffer onion stock at a subsidized rate of Rs 25 per kg in retail markets to alleviate consumer burden. Additionally, in August 2023, India had initially imposed a ban on onion exports until December 31, 2023.

Following reports of the Centre’s potential decision to lift the export ban on onions, wholesale onion prices surged by 40.62 per cent to Rs 1,800 per quintal on February 19 in Lasalgaon, the nation’s largest wholesale onion market, compared to Rs 1,280 per quintal on February 17.

Given the upcoming general elections in the next couple of months, it’s improbable that the ban will be lifted even after March 31. Sources indicate that rabi (winter) onion production is anticipated to be lower due to reduced area coverage, particularly in Maharashtra.

The Indian government’s decision to extend the prohibition on onion exports until the end of the fiscal year underscores its commitment to stabilizing supply levels and mitigating inflationary pressures in the market. This continuation of the ban aligns with the Centre’s previous actions and reflects the ongoing challenges faced in the agricultural sector, especially with regards to onion production. With the looming general elections and anticipated lower rabi onion production, the likelihood of lifting the export ban remains slim.

Following the 'Delhi Chalo' march, farmers led by Sarwan Singh Pandher evaluate the government's proposal for MSP on cotton, maize, and pulses but demand a legislative MSP guarantee.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher revealed on Monday that following the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, farmers would talk about the Center’s proposal for government agencies to buy cotton, maize, and pulses at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). However, Pandher reaffirmed the unwavering need for a formal guarantee of the MSP on crops.

This statement comes after a meeting on Sunday between farmer leaders and a panel of three Union ministers. The Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Arjun Munda, and the Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai led the fourth round of negotiations with the protesting farmers in Chandigarh, during which the meeting took place.

Pandher stressed to reporters at the border crossing at Shambhu that farmers will have a detailed conversation about the government’s proposal. He acknowledged the offer but insisted that the demand for a statute that guarantees MSP is unnegotiable.

Notably, farmer leaders are going to the border post at Khanauri, where a farmer, 72 years old, who was taking part in the demonstration, passed away on Sunday due to a heart arrest. At the border crossing at Shambhu, a 63-year-old farmer had also died after a heart attack earlier.

The farmers’ main demands are to have the MSP legally guaranteed, to have the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission implemented, to have pensions for farmers and farm labourers, to waive farm debt, to not raise electricity rates, to withdraw police cases, to provide justice for the victims of the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri in 2021, to reinstate the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and to provide compensation to the families of farmers who lost their lives during an earlier agitation in 2020–21.

“Farmers who grow ‘tur dal,’ ‘urad dal,’ masoor dal,’ or maize will enter into a contract with cooperative societies like the NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers Federation) and NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India) for buying their crop at MSP for the next five years,” Union Minister Piyush Goyal said in a statement to the media after the meeting. He also suggested a formal deal wherein the Cotton Corporation of India would buy cotton for five years from farmers at MSP.

Goyal underlined the other demands’ substance and policy-drivenness, saying that talks on these topics will go on even as elections get near.

Bhagwant Mann, the Chief Minister of Punjab who attended the conference, reiterated the farmers’ demand for a formal guarantee from MSP to protect their interests. Farmers from Punjab launched the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, which has been temporarily suspended. Pandher hopes for a resolution but warns that if all issues are not resolved, the march will resume on February 21. On the other hand, Goyal conceded that lengthy talks will be necessary to resolve some requests.

Arjun Munda, the Union Minister of Agriculture, stresses positive communication with farmers' unions and calls for caution and a supportive atmosphere. Reforms, such as debt reduction, MSP guarantees, and job prospects, are what protestors are calling for.

Union Minister for Agriculture, Arjun Munda reaffirmed the government’s dedication to having a positive conversation with the unions representing farmers. The minister called for a discussion-friendly atmosphere, stressing the value of taking into account different points of view.

“We will keep up our efforts to have constructive conversations with the farmers’ union, as I had previously stated. Farmers’ organisations need to be aware that the law under discussion cannot be decided in a way that will allow people to criticise the current state of affairs without giving it careful thought and understanding in the days ahead,” Minister Arjun Munda stated, urging all parties involved to handle the situation with caution.

Munda additionally urged farmer’s organisations to refrain from activities that interfere with day-to-day operations, stressing the need to preserve an environment that encourages communication. He asked for assistance in making sure that the general public was not unduly disturbed and issued a warning against taking any steps that would exacerbate the situation.

Meanwhile, farmers trying to renew the ‘Dilli Chalo’ protest broke into violence at the Punjab-Haryana border near Shambhu. In an endeavour to uphold law and order, the Delhi Police has implemented Section 144, which limits the admission of tractor-trolleys and sizable gatherings.

Due to security checks and demonstrations, the continuing farmers’ protest has caused lengthy traffic congestion at the Delhi-Ghaziabad border. To control the situation, police, Rapid Action Force members, and Riot Control Vehicles are stationed at the Singhu Border in Delhi.

Twelve demands have been made to the central government by the farmers, who are led by the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee and Sanyukt Kisan Morcha. These include a bill that forbids debt in full, a pension plan for farmers and agricultural workers, and a minimum support price (MSP) guarantee for all commodities.

The protesters are also demanding the restoration of the Land Acquisition Act of 2013, which would guarantee farmer permission and compensation four times the collector rate, and the repeal of the Electricity Amendment Bill 2020. Justice for those responsible for the killings in Lakhimpur Kheri, financial support for the families of farmers killed in the 2021 protests, and employment possibilities for family members are among the other demands.

Furthermore, under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA), which is related to farming, farmers are requesting 200 days of employment per year and a day wage of Rs 700.

By combining natural farming with technology, the Indian government empowers women in agriculture through programmes like ATMA and NMNF, promotes sustainable development, and attends to farmer concerns.

The government has implemented a two-pronged plan, incorporating both traditional farming methods and contemporary technologies, to drastically alter India’s agricultural environment. This comprehensive strategy seeks to empower women in agriculture, address issues encountered by farmers, and advance sustainable development.

National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF):

India, a country largely dependent on agriculture, must contend with challenges like erratic weather patterns and shifting market conditions. Acknowledging this, the government has been actively promoting natural farming since 2019–20 through programmes like the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) and Bharatiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati (BPKP). With a focus on community-based organisations like Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) like Krishi Sakhis and Pashu Sakhis, BPKP has changed into NMNF.

Gender Inclusivity in Agriculture:

The Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) makes sure that women are actively involved in farming to close the gender gap. Women’s Food Security Groups are encouraged and assisted with training, publication, and input access under ATMA criteria. These organisations support a variety of agricultural endeavours and act as “Model Food Security Hubs.” Guidelines are implemented under the supervision of a Gender Coordinator, who makes sure that women make up at least 30% of the group.

Agricultural Initiatives to Empower Women:

Women work as farmer friends under ATMA, encouraging creative endeavours. To encourage women beneficiaries to participate actively in agriculture, the Central Sector Scheme of Agri. Clinics and Agri. Business Centres offer a 44% subsidy.

Role of National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE):

By organising One Day Awareness Programmes on Natural Farming for Gram Pradhans around the nation, MANAGE plays a crucial role in raising awareness. Information is disseminated to benefit a variety of stakeholders, including women farmers, through a website and knowledge repository on Natural Farming as well as study materials in 22 regional languages.

Elements Affecting the Uptake of Contemporary Farming Technologies:

The adoption of contemporary farming methods is influenced by a number of variables, such as regional variances, socioeconomic circumstances, crop types farmed, and the accessibility of irrigation facilities. To encourage modernization, the government has launched initiatives including the National e-Governance Plan for Agriculture and the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation.

Value Chains and Market Linkages:

Examine the strategies the government has in store to improve farmer access to fair pricing for their produce by strengthening market connections. There can also be an emphasis on programmes that work to strengthen value chains, lower post-harvest losses, and raise farmers’ overall income.

Climate-Sensitive Farming:

Talk about the steps made to strengthen Indian agriculture’s resistance to climate change while keeping in mind the erratic weather patterns noted in the introduction. Additionally, emphasis on any new methods or technologies that have been implemented to lessen the effects of climate change on agriculture.

Training and Skill Development:

Give information about the training courses that are available to farmers, particularly women, to give them the know-how for natural and modern farming methods. While assisting continued skill development in agriculture, there can also be a look into joint ventures with academic institutions or career training facilities.

Developments in Agricultural Mechanisation – Initiatives from Punjab and Bihar:

During 2014–15, Punjab and Bihar have made notable progress under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation. With the help of Rs. 111.43 crores, 12,666 pieces of agricultural equipment can now be distributed with subsidies thanks to Punjab. Similarly, Bihar distributed 28,559 pieces of agricultural machinery after receiving Rs. 94.93 crores. Through initiatives approved by the National e-Governance Plan for agriculture, both states have embraced technology innovations.

In the ongoing season, the area under summer crops in Karnataka has witnessed a notable 57.7% year-on-year decline, plummeting to 137,000 hectares as of the latest report from the state agriculture department. This sharp decrease from the normal season area of 242,000 hectares is concerning, especially when compared to the 324,000 hectares sown in the same period last year. The state has set an ambitious target of 654,100 hectares for this season, with only 20.9% of the target area covered so far. The acreage dedicated to paddy has seen a drastic 80.5% year-on-year reduction, reaching 41,000 hectares from the previous 210,000 hectares. Chana cultivation, on the other hand, has experienced a positive shift, with 1,000 hectares sown compared to none in the previous year. However, the state’s overall progress indicates that only 5,000 hectares have been utilized for summer pulses, the same as the previous year, against a set target of 15,000 hectares for the current season.

Karnataka, known as the leading maize producer, has seen a decrease in maize cultivation to 19,000 hectares from 26,000 hectares a year ago, with a target set at 54,000 hectares for the current season. Cereal cultivation has notably decreased to 66,000 hectares from 242,000 hectares last year. Oilseeds, including groundnut, sunflower, and safflower, show a decline in acreage to 55,000 hectares compared to 62,000 hectares last year, with a target of 132,900 hectares for the season. Groundnut acreage specifically has reduced to 52,000 hectares from 57,000 hectares a year ago. In addition, government data reveals a 14% year-on-year decrease in wheat stocks held by the Food Corp of India as of February 1, standing at 13.2 million tonnes, down from 15.4 million tonnes last year. Despite efforts to sell over 10 million tonnes of wheat through the open market sales scheme, the central pool of food grains has seen depletion due to factors like open market sales, free foodgrain schemes, and Bharat atta sales.

The Food Corp of India’s open market sales have witnessed substantial activity, with a record 478,000 tonnes of wheat sold through weekly e-auctions on Wednesday, totaling more than 8 million tonnes since the auctions began in June 2023. Wheat stocks with the statutory body have seen a 19% decline compared to January, attributing to the overall reduction in total food grain stocks, which currently stand at 34.3 million tonnes, slightly down from 34.5 million tonnes a month ago but a 6% increase from the previous year’s 32.4 million tonnes.

Barricades and tear gas are being used to stop farmers as they march towards New Delhi. Tensions are exacerbated by unmet demands for higher support costs, loan forgiveness, and unfulfilled government pledges. Protesters want a peaceful conclusion.

After ineffective discussions with the government, thousands of farmers were marching towards New Delhi, and tensions erupted close to the Indian capital as security forces used tear gas to scatter them. About 200 kilometres north of the city, in the Ambala region, protesters encountered a forceful police response as they demanded more help and promises.

Police erected barriers of barbed wire, spikes, and cement blocks to obstruct several entry points into New Delhi. Huge gatherings were outlawed in the city, while internet access was cut off in several areas of the nearby state of Haryana.

A farmer group leader named Sarwan Singh Pandher explained why the demonstrators were reluctant to breach barricades and stressed their wish for a peaceful conclusion. He did, however, emphasise their necessity if the government failed to join to their requests.

On Monday, union officials and government ministers were unable to agree on several important demands made by farmers, such as increased support prices, crop price guarantees, loan forgiveness, and other concessions. Pandher charged that the government had broken its pledge to double farmers’ incomes three years prior.

The sheer volume of tractors—hundreds of them—moving from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh towards the capital highlighted the political clout of farmers. Protests are once again a possibility ahead of the anticipated April start of the national elections.

On Republic Day in 2021, farmers broke over barriers and entered the city as part of a similar “Chalo Delhi” march. There were at least 700 casualties and the establishment of improvised camps as a result of this year-long protest against an agricultural reform law that presented a serious threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.

Three controversial rules that farmers claimed would give private corporations power over the agriculture industry were overturned by Modi’s government in response to the intense outcry. It was agreed to set up a panel of government representatives and farmers to discuss support prices for all farm produce. Subsequent sessions, although, have not produced any results.

With roughly a fifth of the country’s GDP coming from agriculture, which employs two-thirds of the workforce, climate change is making matters worse for the sector. Many appeals for broad government support have been made again as thousands of farmers perish from debt, poverty, and crop failure.

The union cabinet, in its meeting held on Wednesday, agreed to a 2-7% increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for six crops.

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, the union cabinet, in its meeting held on Wednesday, agreed to a 2-7% increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for six crops, aiming to ensure fair compensation for farmers and address their concerns. The decision, a crucial one for the farming community, comes at a time when elections loom large, and the government is looking to address the pressing issues faced by farmers.

The government had been considering a hike in the MSP for six rabi or winter crops for the 2024-25 marketing season. This move is part of a broader strategy to support farmers and boost their income during the rabi season, which contributes significantly to India’s total foodgrain output. The MSP serves as a safety net for farmers, assuring them a minimum income regardless of market prices. It plays a pivotal role in promoting food security by encouraging the cultivation of specific crops, thereby stabilizing the prices of essential staples such as wheat, rice, and pulses. The cabinet committee, responsible for approving MSPs, convenes twice a year, once for kharif crops in June and again for rabi crops in October.

Among the crops receiving a boost in MSP, wheat and masoor dal emerged as the major beneficiaries with a substantial 7% increase. This move is expected to provide much-needed relief to wheat and masoor dal growers, addressing their concerns and contributing to their economic well-being. The MSP for wheat, a crucial cereal in India, has been raised to ₹2,275 per quintal from ₹2,125 in the previous season, providing a significant uplift for wheat farmers. Similarly, masoor dal, an essential pulse crop, witnessed a substantial hike, with the MSP increasing to ₹6,425 per quintal from ₹6,000 in the previous season. Barley, a staple cereal, experienced a 6.6% hike, with its MSP rising to ₹1,850 per quintal from ₹1,735 in the previous season. Chana, a pulse crop, witnessed a 2% increase, with the MSP going up to ₹5,440 per quintal from ₹5,335.The MSPs for oilseed crops, including rapeseed & mustard oilseed and safflower oilseed, were also raised to ₹5,650 and ₹5,800 per quintal, respectively, for the 2023-24 marketing season.

The decision to set MSPs at a minimum of 1.5 times the overall average cost of production across India, as outlined in the Union Budget 2018-19, reflects the government’s intent to ensure fair compensation for farmers and encourage sustainable agricultural practices. Increasing the Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) is a big step forward in the government’s ongoing work to help farmers overcome challenges, boost their earnings, and strengthen the foundation of agriculture in the country.

VK Packwell, India and China’s ONLY patent-holding ISI mark water carrying flexible-foldable pipes manufacturing company, and India’s sole patent-holding ISI mark drip, sprinkler, and micro-irrigation with flexible-foldable pipe manufacturing company, is making waves in the agricultural sector. With a commitment to serving farmers, VK Packwell has already impacted the lives of more than 71,00,000 farmers and counting.

Affordable Irrigation Solutions for All

One of the most remarkable aspects of VK Packwell’s offerings is its affordability. In a market where traditional irrigation products are priced between 150 to 200 Rupees per meter, VK Packwell’s innovative solutions come at approx 40 Rupees per meter. The affordability factor is further enhanced by subsidies provided by various Indian states, making these technologies accessible to farmers for approximately 20 Rupees per meter.

Pioneering Flexible Foldable Technology

VK Packwell’s flexible, foldable technology is at the core of their groundbreaking success. This innovation addresses a pressing issue in India, where more than 50% of the land is undulated, rendering conventional irrigation systems ineffective. VK Packwell’s products are tailor-made to serve these challenging terrains, enabling efficient irrigation even in undulated areas. This technology has the power to transform wastelands into fertile agricultural spaces, redefining the possibilities for Indian farmers.

Approved by BIS and ISI-Certified

VK Packwell’s commitment to quality and innovation is further validated by its products’ approvals from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and ISI certification. These marks of quality attest to the company’s adherence to the highest industry standards.

Empowering Marginal Farmers

In a country where over 85% of farmers are small and marginal, VK Packwell’s affordable irrigation solutions have been a game-changer. These farmers often struggle to afford expensive irrigation systems, limiting their crop cultivation to once a year. VK Packwell’s technology has unlocked the potential for year-round cultivation, significantly improving income and food security for marginalized farmers.

A Solution for Every Farmer

VK Packwell recognizes that farmers across India face diverse challenges. Whether it’s the undulated land in hilly terrains or the financial constraints of small-scale farming, VK Packwell aims to be the solution. Their flexible-foldable pipes and irrigation systems offer versatility and accessibility for all types of farmers.

Niti Aayog Report Reveals Rainfall Dependence: VK Packwell to Bridge Gap

In a recent Niti Aayog report, it was highlighted that a staggering 50% of India’s agricultural dependence on rainfall can be attributed to affordability issues surrounding expensive irrigation systems, particularly in undulated terrains. This revelation has spurred VK Packwell, a dynamic player in the agricultural sector, into action.

VK Packwell, a company with a history of innovation, has identified a significant untapped market opportunity to address this challenge. With nearly half of India’s agricultural sector relying heavily on inconsistent rainfall patterns, the potential for improvement is vast.

The affordability factor has been a major roadblock for farmers in undulated terrains, where traditional irrigation systems can be prohibitively expensive. VK Packwell aims to bridge this gap by introducing cost-effective and efficient irrigation solutions tailored to the specific needs of these regions.

Recognition within Agricultural Institutes and Government Frameworks

VK Packwell’s products have gained recognition and trust within agricultural institutes and government frameworks. They have been running successfully in several Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) centers throughout the country for the past five years. This demonstrates not only the effectiveness of VK Packwell’s solutions but also their alignment with the research and development initiatives of the Indian agricultural sector.

UP BEST MEME 2022 Award

VK Packwell’s dedication to excellence has not gone unnoticed. The company was honored as the UP Best MSME in 2022 by CM Shri Yogi Adityanath ji, cementing its position as an upcoming industry leader.

VK’s Mission: Farmer Earns Most

VK Packwell’s tagline, “VK’s Mission: Farmer Earns Most,” encapsulates the company’s ethos and unwavering dedication to improving the lives of Indian farmers. With a transformative impact that extends beyond just business, VK Packwell has redefined the possibilities of Indian agriculture. By making irrigation accessible, efficient, and affordable, VK Packwell is contributing to the prosperity of millions of farmers, rejuvenating wastelands, and ensuring food security for the nation.
Healthy soil is the foundation for plant life. It’s the very fabric that cradles their roots, fostering their growth, and...

Healthy soil is the foundation for plant life. It’s the very fabric that cradles their roots, fostering their growth, and is fundamental to our planet’s sustainability.

Over 95% of the world’s food production is soil-based, and soil degradation is an important concern. As more mouths need feeding, there’s an urgent call to treat our soil not just as the dirt beneath our feet but as the precious resource it is.

Companies across the globe are recognizing this imperative, today, we spotlight three leaders in the arena of soil health: ICL Group (NYSE: ICL), Bayer (NYSE: BAYRY), and Pepsico (NYSE: PEP).

ICL Group: Pioneering Sustainable Solutions for Soil

ICL Group has been a beacon of sustainability, ardently addressing agricultural challenges through innovative solutions. With an unwavering commitment to environmental protection, ICL utilizes cutting-edge technologies to champion the preservation of Earth’s invaluable resources. Recognized as a leading global fertilizer manufacturer, the company offers advanced solutions to boost crop yields while simultaneously safeguarding our environment.

Polysulphate® for example is an organic and naturally mined mineral comprising sulfur, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. As a solitary complex crystal, this mineral, sourced directly from the North Sea, is environmentally friendly, approved for organic agriculture, and boasts the smallest carbon footprint compared to standard fertilizers.

Another recent innovation is a first-of-its-kind controlled-release fertilizer with a biodegradable coating called Eqo.x that further demonstrates ICL’s commitment to sustainability.

Likewise, ICL’s controlled-release fertigation fertilizers, which are systematically distributed through micro-sprinkler or drip systems, offer precision, efficiency, and minimal disturbance to the soil. The company’s biostimulants further enhance soil vitality, amplifying nutrient absorption, resilience against stress, and overall productivity. ICL’s dedication extends beyond product creation, as their agronomists continuously teach, guide, and inspire the farming community on best practices, ensuring that the journey towards healthier soil is a collective effort.

Bayer: Advancing Agriculture Through Science and Innovation

Bayer has been synonymous with scientific excellence and innovation in the agricultural sphere. Rooted in their dedication to a hunger-free world, Bayer emphasizes sustainable agricultural practices that prioritize soil health. Their extensive research and development efforts have birthed solutions aimed at enhancing soil fertility, water retention, and disease resistance.

Furthermore, Bayer’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its range of bio-solutions, promoting the use of beneficial microbes to improve soil structure and nutrient availability. By continuously pushing the boundaries of science and technology, Bayer ensures that farmers can meet growing food demands without compromising the integrity of the soil.

Pepsico and its Positive Agriculture Program: Nurturing the Future of Farming

Pepsico, a name well known in the food and beverage sector, is taking strides to transform agricultural practices with its Positive Agriculture program. Recognizing the intimate relationship between soil health and the quality of produce, Pepsico is working to actualize farming methods that are environmentally sound, economically viable, and socially responsible.

Their program focuses on promoting regenerative farming practices that enhance biodiversity, reduce erosion, and restore the soil’s natural balance. By partnering with farmers and providing them with the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary for sustainable farming, Pepsico is ensuring that its supply chain not only meets the needs of today but also fosters a brighter, greener future.

Preserving the Soil that Sustains Us

Sustainability: With the UN forewarning the potential of soil depletion over the coming decades, and its potential economic reverberations, proactive measures are a must. Soil degradation threatens food production, ecosystem sustenance, and the very fabric of life.

Healthy soils, teeming with life, sustain our existence. They are vital for clean air and water, filter pollutants, cycle nutrients, and are the physical environment that cradles diverse life forms. What’s more, soil acts as carbon reservoirs, and depletion can unleash stored carbon, accentuating global warming. A myriad of factors determines the health of the soil. Factors like age, parent material, climate, and even topography play their part. The composition of minerals, organic matter, organisms, gases, and water ensures the vitality of the soil, with each component holding a unique significance.

The global health of soil is under threat. Activities like erosion, pollution, over-cultivation, overgrazing, and indiscriminate fertilizer use, are depleting its very essence. The aftereffects, such as loss of fertility, decreased yield, and environmental contamination, have a cascading impact on human health and survival.

Yet, soil health can be rejuvenated by adopting sustainable soil management strategies, like fostering living roots, enhancing biodiversity, minimizing soil disturbance, and judiciously using mineral fertilizers, which can turn the tide. Integrating organic sources, like compost and biofertilizers, ensures that a healthy soil legacy can endure for future generations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the health of our soil directly mirrors the health of our world. Thanks to the endeavors of companies like ICL Group, Bayer, and Pepsico, the journey towards a sustainable agricultural landscape seems possible and promising.

Their innovative solutions and unwavering commitment, illuminate the path towards a sustainable future. Embracing and supporting such initiatives is our collective responsibility to ensure that the soil continues to nurture life, today and always. We owe it to our future generations to ensure that the bedrock of life remains fertile, vibrant, and teeming with potential.

According to news agency PTI, the government is looking into a number of methods for the disposal of onions, including e-auctions, e-commerce, as well as through states at discounted prices via retail stores of their consumer cooperatives and companies.

On August 19, the government put a 40% levy on the export of onions in an effort to restrain price growth and boost supplies in the domestic market. Through a notification, the Finance Ministry levied a 40% export tariff on onions through December 31, 2023. The export tax was announced in the midst of reports predicting an increase in onion prices in September.

To guarantee that prices are kept in check until the fresh crop starts to arrive in October, the government last week stated that it will release onion from its buffer stock in the selected locations with immediate effect.

According to news agency PTI, the government is looking into a number of methods for the disposal of onions, including e-auctions, e-commerce, as well as through states at discounted prices via retail stores of their consumer cooperatives and companies.

Although there is a plentiful supply of onions throughout the country, a substantial percentage of them are of poor quality because of this year’s lengthy period of extreme summer heat.

In addition to the high percentage of poor grade onions, dealers claimed that significant inflation in other vegetables is another factor driving up onion costs.

In July, India’s annual retail inflation increased significantly to a 15-month high of 7.44% from 4.87% the previous month, driven mostly by a steep increase in the cost of vegetables and cereals. For the first time in five months, the data exceeded the upper limit of the RBI’s 2%–6% inflation range.

According to the bulletin, high-frequency food price data for August so far suggests that the cost of cereals and pulses has risen this month. Although more recent data shows modest price reductions, tomato prices overall continued to rise, the RBI stated.

In its August bulletin, the Reserve Bank of India reported that the prices of potatoes and onions had also increased sequentially.

On August 1, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Ltd (NCDEX) stated that starting on August 14, the trading hours for the commodity derivatives section will alter. In a circular issued on Tuesday, NCDEX stated that “the trade timings and client code modification timings at the exchange shall be revised with effect from Monday, August 14, 2023, until further notice.”

The segment’s trading hours are currently between 9 am and 5 pm. The most recent amendment will shift the hours to 10 am to 5 pm. According to NCDEX, the updated client code modification hours are 10 am to 5:15 pm, with “the pre-Open session shall be from 9:45 am to 10 am for all commodities.”

While MCX has leadership in the gold, metals, and oil markets, NCDEX is primarily an exchange with leadership in the agro commodities categories. In the category of commodities with the highest volume of trading, it is different from the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX).

On April 19, 2023, NCDEX launched future contracts for Isabgol seeds earlier this year. Following a 13-year hiatus, the exchange started offering groundnut futures contracts last month. Additionally, it began trading in spice options on July 15.

Cereals and pulses, oil and oil seeds, fibers, soft spices, guar seeds, and other products are listed for prospective contracts on the company’s website. The trading of the Robusta Cherry (AB) coffee future contract begins on September 30.

The commodities exchange platform was established as a public limited company in April 2003, and it started operating as a recognized association under The Forward Contracts (Regulation) Act of 1952 in December of that same year.

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE), and Canara Bank are a few of the company’s significant owners.

For the year ending in March 2024, HSBC has kept its inflation projection of 5% but sees bigger risks if cereal inflation picks up. Data on rice sowing and rainfall distribution will be crucial in the coming weeks, according to the economists.

The main issue is not with tomatoes, but rather with other things, according to economists Pranjul Bhandari and Aayushi Chaudhary, who stated in a paper. Despite the fact that concerns about rising food prices are justified. It is “legitimate” to be concerned about cereals, such as rice and wheat, as this could result in higher costs.

For the year ending in March 2024, HSBC has kept its inflation projection of 5% but sees bigger risks if cereal inflation picks up. Data on rice sowing and rainfall distribution will be crucial in the coming weeks, according to the economists.

The analysts warned that tepid seeding in northwest India and insufficient rainfall in the south and east could harm the rice crop and hinder shipments for India, the top exporter of rice in the world. They said, “This suggests that wheat, a partial substitute for the food staple, could have global price implications.”

A staple in Indian diets, cereals account for around 10% of the basket of goods measured by the consumer price index. Rising food costs caused retail inflation to reach a three-month high of 4.81% in June, which prompted economists to uphold their estimates of price increases for the year. As a result, the central bank may decide to hold rates for a longer period of time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi must also control price pressures because he would be running in the national elections the following year. To control domestic pricing, the country last week barred the export of less expensive non-basmati white rice.

Prices for vegetables and pulses have skyrocketed as a result of insufficient monsoon rains in some regions of India and floods in other others. Inflation pressures were fueled by a more than 400% increase in the price of tomatoes since the year’s beginning as well as fluctuating onion and potato costs, which are essential components of an Indian dinner.

The analysts stated that tomatoes are a short-cycle crop and price increases often reverse after two months. They stated that the price increases for oilseeds, sugar, and legumes might also be bearable.

Agricultural industries are a vital cog of society, providing food for the public as well as building materials from forestry.

However, it’s a risky industry to work in. The latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that construction is the only industry that featured more fatal accidents across 2021-22.

Non-fatal injuries are also common in agriculture, forestry and fishing, putting the onus on businesses to keep their employees as safe as possible by providing correct personal protective equipment and regular training.

The dangers of the agricultural industry

Working in agriculture comes with inherent risks and dangers in the line of everyday duties.

Large and heavy machinery with multiple moving parts is typically used to complete routine tasks, while there is also a heavy reliance on large vehicles such as tractors and harvesters.

Farmwork often involves lifting large and heavy items, while some livestock can also pose threats while moving them around fields and barns.

Rough terrain and working exposed to the elements also increase the risk of slips, trips and falls.

How fatal accidents occur in agricultural settings

According to the HSE, the majority of fatal accidents in the agricultural industry occurred in the following five circumstances.

Struck by moving vehicle (29%)

Injured by an animal (17%)

Struck by moving object (14%)

Falls from a height (14%)

Contact with moving machinery (12%)

Slips, trips and falls account for more non-fatal injury than any other kind of incident, while lifting and carrying heavy objects also comes into play here.

It’s imperative that great care is taken to mitigate these risks. This involves regularly reviewing health and safety protocols, providing training to staff using different machinery and providing protective equipment such as boots, gloves and helmets.

What happens after suffering a farming injury?

Regardless of how you judge the severity of an injury to be, you should always seek treatment after suffering an injury in an agricultural setting. Trying to work through the pain and put off treatment could lead to aggravated symptoms and further injury.

Working while not at your strongest could also put someone else at a greater risk of suffering an injury as well.

If you suffer a serious injury that was due to someone else’s negligence or malicious actions, then you may be able to start a compensation claim.

A claim can help you cover the costs of any treatment you need, as well as cover lost income if you are unable to work for a period of time.

Some worry that making a claim against their employer may result in them losing their job. Please note that it is illegal for you to be sacked for bringing a claim against those who have a duty of care towards you.

Today, drones, sometimes known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being used in a variety of industries to boost productivity, improve surveillance and gather intelligence.

This includes the agricultural industry, as farmers are increasingly using drones to help them perform essential tasks and improve the efficiency of their farms. Here, we look at some of the ways that high-spec drones can help to improve productivity in farming.

Inspect and monitor fields

Thanks to intelligent sensors such as capacitive proximity sensors, thermal sensors, and hyperspectral sensors, drones can help farmers to monitor and inspect their fields. Drones can travel long distances much faster than a farmer could on foot or by tractor, giving an overview of crop health, height, water quality, and more. Thermal sensors can even help to monitor livestock.

This means that farmers can save a huge amount of time that it would take to visually check and perform soil analysis in each field, which in turn reduces labor costs. It also allows them to make quicker decisions on how to best look after their crop and animals.

Provide details on weather patterns

A huge benefit of drones is that they can collect data on the weather, including temperature, humidity, wind, storms, clouds, and more. This environmental monitoring is hugely beneficial for farmers as it allows them to track changes in the weather and take action to protect their crops and livestock.

It also allows them to accurately plan when to carry out certain tasks, such as harvesting, planting seeds, or fertilizing their fields. Having access to this information means farmers can make quick decisions on how best to look after their yield in line with environmental changes.

Help with pest control and fertilization

To run a successful operation, farmers must ensure their fields are fertile and kept free from as many pests as possible. This often involves manually spraying fields with fertilizer and pesticides which can be time-consuming and labor intensive.

Drones can help improve productivity in this area by carrying out this task for the farmer. They can be equipped with technology that allows them to fly over fields, spraying them with fertilizer or pesticides. This is beneficial as it can save a huge amount of time and money for farmers, as well as improve their yield.

While drones do come with a range of challenges such as high upfront costs and the learning required for skillful operation, there’s no denying the advantages they offer to farmers. By providing critical information that can be acted on straight away, drones can help to resolve issues much more quickly, improve crop health, reduce time-intensive tasks, and increase overall productivity.

Have you ever considered that investing in top-rated farming equipment could be the key to transforming your agribusiness and achieving a successful–and sustainable future? Believe it or not; the right tools can make all the difference in streamlining operations-as well as reducing environmental impact and maximizing profitability. Interestingly however; many farmers still overlook the importance of modern machinery in their quest for success. So–the question is–what are some essential pieces of equipment that can revolutionize your agribusiness?

Precision Agriculture Technologies

Precision agriculture technologies have been gaining traction in recent years; these innovations enable farmers to collect and analyze crucial data-mainly about their crops–but also soil conditions–and even weather patterns. By utilizing advanced tools like GPS-guided tractors variable-rate fertilizers and remote sensing equipment, farmers can optimize their management strategies and improve overall efficiency. In a very short amount of time these technologies have proven to significantly reduce input costs–while also boosting yields. It pays to consider that adopting precision agriculture practices could be the key to unlocking your farm’s full potential.

The Importance of Skid Steer Tracks

It’s often overlooked that skid steer tracks play a vital role in enhancing performance–as well as productivity on the farm. According to professionals in the field–Skid Heaven–with high-quality tracks your skid steer loader can easily navigate challenging terrains while minimizing soil compaction–an essential consideration for sustainable farming practices. In other words; by upgrading your skid steer tracks you can boost operational efficiency while preserving soil quality for future generations.

Solar-Powered Farming Equipment

In today’s eco-conscious world there’s no doubt that renewable energy sources are becoming more and more popular. You might already know that solar-powered farming equipment offers an environmentally friendly solution for powering essential machinery like irrigation systems or electric fences–but would you have believed that harnessing solar energy could also lead to significant cost savings? By reducing reliance on fossil fuels and investing in solar equipment farmers around the nation can cut energy expenses–while contributing to a greener future.

Automated Machinery

From self-driving tractors to robotic milking machines automation is changing the way farmers manage their operations. These innovative tools not only decrease labor costs–but–also improve efficiency–as well as–accuracy. Simply put- the adoption of automated machinery is an investment worth considering for any forward-thinking farmer– or anyone seeking a competitive edge in this industry.

Vertical Farming Systems

To everyone’s surprise vertical farming systems have emerged as an unexpected yet promising solution for space-constrained urban environments. By growing crops in vertically stacked layers these systems maximize yield per square foot–but not only that– they also conserve valuable resources like water and land. While still a relatively new concept (and might be for the next few years)- vertical farming technologies could reshape agriculture as we know it–potentially offering a sustainable solution for feeding our ever-growing global population.

Investing in top-rated farming equipment is crucial for any agribusiness aiming to stay ahead of the curve; from precision agriculture technologies to skid steer tracks modern equipment can streamline operations–but also reduce costs and contribute to a sustainable future. So are you ready to take your agribusiness to new heights?

The story by Bloomberg said, “Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi boldly declared that his country was ready to “feed the world” after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Less than four months later, the government needs to consider grain imports.”

Responding to a report published by Bloomberg earlier today, 21st August 2022, which said India is undergoing food shortages and planned to import wheat. The Department of Food & Public Distribution said India does not have plans to import wheat.

The story by Bloomberg said, “Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi boldly declared that his country was ready to “feed the world” after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Less than four months later, the government needs to consider grain imports.”

To clarify, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said, “There is no such plan to import wheat into India. The country has sufficient stocks to meet our domestic requirements and the Food Corporation of India has enough stock for public distribution.

The report stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had “boldly declared” to feed the world as Russia invaded Ukraine.

However, the consecutive streams of heat waves across the country have devastated a substantial yield which has caused a hike in food prices.

The price of wheat has skyrocketed since the Russian invasion started as, both Russia and Ukraine are one of the largest exporters of wheat contributing to 30% of global exports

According to World Food Programme, WEP, the war is going to affect 81 countries’ food supply putting 47 million people at risk of acute hunger.

In Indore in Madhya Pradesh, which is considered one of the key mandis, wheat prices touched as high as Rs 2,400-2,500 per 100 kg, against Rs 2,000-2,100 until the conflict in Ukraine broke out. Prices of wheat usually remain on the lower side during this time of the year as freshly harvested rabi crops make their way into the physical markets or mandis.

Still, the current wheat price in India is well above the Centre’s assured Minimum Support Price of Rs 2,015 per 100 kg, which in itself is a rare phenomenon. Currently, wheat is trading a little below Rs 2,400 per 100 kg in Indore. In other markets too, wheat prices have somewhat softened.

However, the wholesale prices of wheat have been stabilised bringing them down from their all-time high prices due to Central Government’s efforts.

Wheat has also been put under the “prohibited category” of exports.
